More Than Ethanol is Produced from a Bushel of Corn
The production of corn into ethanol produces much more than 2.5 gallons of fuel ethanol. By-products of the process produce valuable products that are used in food production. Any discussion of the value of corn for fuel ethanol should take these by-products into account.
Not only can 2.5 gallons of fuel ethanol be produced from a bushel of corn but also 12 lbs of 21% protein feed is produced which can be used to feed livestock. 3.0 lbs of 60% gluten meal is produced as a by-product as well. This meal is very high in protein and is used as a supplement in feed for livestock, poultry and pets. Beyond the feed by-products another 1.5 lbs of corn oil is produced from the same bushel of corn from which 2.5 gallons of fuel has been extracted. This oil can be used as cooking oil, or used to produce margarine, mayonnaise, salad dressing, shortening, or soups. In addition to the feed and oil, 17 lbs of carbon dioxide is generated in the process and this can be used as a refrigerant, or in carbonated beverages, or be piped into greenhouses to help vegetable crops to grow more rapidly. The CO2 can even be used in oil fields to help increase production in oil wells.
There are two ways to process corn into ethanol - dry milling or wet milling. The by-products mentioned are all from the wet milling process of producing ethanol from corn. The dry milling process produces similar useful by-products such as dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS), which is considered a high quality feed for livestock. This process also produces 17 lbs of CO2 for use in other industries. Either way it is processed, the ethanol production process produces useful by-products which are primarily used to make food.
The production of ethanol from corn keeps getting better and more efficient as the technology is refined. According to a recent presentation by the National Corn Growers Association, advances in milling techniques are now generating upwards of 2.8 gallons of fuel ethanol per bushel, with 3 gallons per bushel projected to be achieved soon. Livestock farmers are now converting to more of the DDGS in their feed rations instead of shelled corn, so the production of ethanol will not interfere with livestock production. There are even ethanol plants coming online called "closed-loop" systems that combine a feedlot operation with the ethanol production plant so that the DDGS by-product can go directly to the livestock and the resulting manure put into digesters to produce biogas that runs the ethanol production facility.
7 billion gallons of ethanol were produced in 2020, with more than that on schedule for 2020. That means that a lot of livestock feed was also produced, and a whole lot of magarine and other products from corn oil that will make it across our tables this year. Let's don't forget these by-products as we consider fuel ethanol from corn as a viable fuel for the future.
