Substrate, Aquascaping and a Deep Sand Bed (DSB)?

A breakdown of types of substrate for the benthic area of a marine tank.

Tackling the decision to go bare bottom or use a deep sand bed remains one of the biggest ordeals when starting up a tank, and it can be very trying for some. The decision to go with a deep sand bed(DSB) as opposed to a bare bottom tank with nothing but some live rock. has its limits and drawbacks, as does going with the bare bottom benthic area. Deep sand bed mentioned earlier creates a place beneficial to hosting, raising and reproducing and feeding, many types of polychaete worms, bacteria, feather dusters, snails, crabs, cucumbers and hares. Pods also rely heavily on a deep sand bed for protection and feeding and housing.

This DSB, will in effect serve as attachment sites for beneficial microbes and as water chemistry buffers. Jaubert and Berlin set-ups used by numerous aquarists are finding that live sand is a viable and valuable addition to their marine tank. Live sand can be an insurmountable addition and a key ingredient in the ability for your tank to be able to denitrify. Sand also serves as a buffer, and a source of soluble calcium and other necessary minerals to sustain invertebrate life in a closed system environment.

The Jaubert method associated with a deep sand bed consists of not just merrily a coarse grained sand bed. This sand lays on top of a piece of plastic roughly 2" deep with a pocket of non oxygenated water trapped underneath the sand. The trapped water pocket is what is known as the plenum. As the water diffuses through the sand, nitrogen waste is completely broken down and nitrogen gas is the end result, which is completely harmless. This system is a process where the encouragement of an anaerobic state is created for the benefit of the microbes that aid in the denitrification process. Dr. Jaubert's method is suppose to add a greater biodiversity in the benthic area of a tank as micro fauna is added much like a refugium. The Berlin method is another, albeit more popular, method than that of the Jaubert style though success can be had by using one or the other. The Berlin method applies, live rock, a deep sand bed, strong light and water flow. The only filtration is that of the protein skimmer(foam fractionation) as a supplement to the live rock and sand for filtration. Activated carbon and kalkwasser is also commonly used to replace calcium hydroxide and to rid the tank of dissolved organics in the pelagic areas of their aquarium. These two methods are a direct result to provide adequate water conditions to help maintain corals especially, but as an improvement to maintain (nutrient-poor) water(Oligotrophic) to encourage coral growth, health and vigor.

The grain size of your substrate often times has direct ramifications as to the types of bottom dwelling fish and inverts you can and should keep. The size of the sand also has a direct correlation to the amount and quickness of detritus accumulating on and within your substrate through diffusion and advection. It seems that the larger the grain size, the easier and quicker it is for detritus to fill up within the voids in the substrate, whereas the sugar sized grain sand is better adapt at suspending the detritus somewhat longer for water flow to suspend the detritus in the water column for skimmer removal. Smaller fish, and inverts such as Sea Hares and Cucumbers especially favor small grain sand for grazing purposes. Sleeper and shrimp Gobies who rely on siphoning sand through their mouth to capture plankton for food ultimately ridding the sand through their gills require small grain sized sand as opposed to the larger sizes. Larger sand would be good choice if you have some type of burrowing fish like Jaw fish or larger fish such as Grouper, and large Angels. Not having sand blown all over the place with the size and power displayed by these bigger fish and the reduced chance of holes/caves within the substrate caving in created by Jaw fish, Lobsters or Engineer Gobi's is beneficial as well.

You also have to look at it in terms of aesthetic proportion. Does it look nice? Do I want to create a certain biotope using one sized grain over another? And what about color of the substrate? Pink, black, white or standard reef sand color? These all have to be addressed to make the tank coordinate with your eye appeal and the fish, coral and inverts you wish to collect, to ensure husbandry requirements are met.

The best form of gravel/substrate for a tank(Marine), is aragonite, hands down in my opinion! This again offers a good buffering capacity, releases traces into your water on a time release basis and can release buffering agents into your water at a higher pH level and temperature. Small or large grain aragonite offers the same benefits chemically. The functional capabilities and eye appeal are the factors that have to be decided upon to help you decide on the grain size.

The bare bottomed tank will enable you to remove detritus easier by using a vacuum and it may help to cut down on nitrates, but aside from that, I am not a true adviser of using this. It is not a realistic representation of our natural reef structure. Plank tonic and meiofaunal organisms, polychaete worms, pods and a myriad of other important benthic organisms are sacrificed by not having an adequate substrate base. If you have live rock, the bare bottom will tend to inhibit the stationary placement of your rock to be less than admirable, possibly causing death or injury to fish, inverts and corals when the live rock comes crashing down. Added biological filtration is sacrificed by using a bare bottomed tank as well.

Finding a happy medium in the benthic areas of your tank is a key component, though just a small part in the overall symmetry of your tanks success and appearance. Whether using different grain size and/or color, aragonite based substrate is the best choice, coupled with the addition of live rock offering you a nice realistic representation of the natural reefs of the world which we ultimately try to en capture and replicate! The sky is the limit in deciding on the best way to aqua scape your tank for the best overall look and functionality without sacrificing the efficiency and effectiveness of your system for that of your living animals!
