How to Weight Plastic Aquarium Plants for a Natural Look
Plastic aquarium plants have fake looking plastic cups at the bottom. There are no natural plants that have cup shaped roots with "Made in China" stamped on them.
Materials Needed to Weight Plastic Aquarium Plants
In order to avoid using the plastic cup tucked in the gravel method of securing your plastic aquarium plants in the substrate, you can weight them using aquarium grade silicone sealant and fish tank gravel, stones, or sand. For this project, you will need at least one plastic aquarium plants, the silicone mentioned above, and a small amount of your aquarium gravel or well-cleaned stones.
How to Weight Plastic Aquarium Plants
The first step in creating the plastic aquarium plant weights is to remove all the plant stems or leaves from the plastic cup at the bottom. You can throw out the plastic cup.
The next step is to choose which types of rocks or gravel you will be using for your plastic aquarium plant weight. Two main methods of weight plants is to use attactive large rocks or bunches of the same gravel you use for the fish tank substrate.
If you are using a large rock, all you have to do is use the aquarium grade sealant like glue to attach the plastic plants to it. Since you do not want people to see the glob of sealant, it is a good idea to attach the plastic aquarium plants to the back side of the rock, or to create a realistic looking rock pile.
If you are using the subtrate gravel for the plastic aquarium plant weight, you should start by making a large goopy pile of the aquarium sealant. Stick the plastic aquarium plants into the goop and scoop fish tank gravel onto it. Push the gravel pieces into the sealant firmly until it forms a solid block.
Whichever method of weighting your plastic aquarium plants you choose, it is very important to allow the aquarium sealant to dry completely before you use it in the tank. When it is dry, all you have to do is drop the weighted plant bunch into the tank where you want it. This method of weighting plastic aquarium plants is useful whether you are using one plant or mutiple plants. You can even create an entire underwater garden scape with different types of plastic aquarium plants.
