How to Turn Fish Water into Plant Food

Steps Required
Place a clean bucket on the floor near the tank, large enough to hold the amount of fish water removed or one that can be handled easily, such as a 5-gallon bucket. The bucket size needed will vary depending on the size of your aquarium. Use more than one bucket, if needed. You do not want to spill the water when you are moving it.
Clip the end of the siphon hose to the side of the bucket to ensure the water goes inside it. Use a gravel vacuum to clean the tank as you siphon the fish water out. Move the gravel slightly to get all of the debris from it.
Continue to siphon the fish water from the tank, until you have removed the required amount. Keep an eye on the bucket to ensure you do not allow the water to overflow.
Remove the gravel vacuum from the tank and empty the water from the hose into the bucket. Replace the water in the aquarium, as needed.
Pour the fish water carefully from the bucket into a watering can to make it easier to water plants in containers. Or pour the fish water directly from the bucket over larger planted areas outside.
Save any extra water in a large container to use later. Use the aquarium water on your vegetable garden, bushes, trees or your flowerbed when needed.

Do not use buckets that contained hazardous or poisonous materials to drain the fish water in, which could harm your plants.
