When it comes to purchasing livestock, it is not as cut and dry as many would perceive it to be. No, you do not need to possess an innate, cognitive mindset or even the same kind of keen savviness employed when buying a new computer. What it does require to successfully select and purchase that next animal for your aquarium is preparedness. Possessing the capacity to decipher between fictional facts and factual fictions, the right and wrong responses from pet store personnel while accurately inspecting possible inhabitants will provide the best results. Conducting an efficient research campaign will provide you with the needed tools while laying the foundation for you to make the best decisions.
Now that we have this piece of the puzzle in place it is time to move on to the three factors that need to be addressed when deciding on purchasing an animal for your aquarium. The three factors are initial state of health, biological aspects of environmental stability and assessment of store and store personnel.

Wild specimens as opposed to captive bred are as different as apples to oranges. Often times, wild caught specimens don't fair very well in captivity and normally succumb to death as a result of stress and insufficient food sources. The size of the individual specimen is very important as well. Very small or large animals tend to be rather timid, not as hardy and unable to cope with the rigors of the collection, shipping and handling processes. However, those that fall somewhere in the middle of these extremes tend to show promise in adapting to these variables hence, are healthier and make a better choice in being maintained in a captive environment.
Now, let's move on to biological aspects of environmental stability. Population dynamics regarding pecking order, compatibility, order of introduction and crowding. The pecking order deals with, often times, sex of the specimen, ratio of males to females and what carries out when the alpha male dies. All too often stress and aggression become one in the same. Ensuring that the right ratio of male to female fish is very critical as one alpha male should be the rule with atleast three or more females to accompany the alpha male. Compatibility deals with the types or species of fish and inverts that can coexist together without bloodshed being the end result. Obviously, not all livestock in the marine hobby are compatible with one another, hence the need to do some research on past and previous fish and inverts to ensure aggression and stress doesn't carry out.
The size of the fish being added can have alot to do with whether, or not, you should refrain from purchasing the desired fish. The aggressive nature portrayed by the fish you currently possess can have a profound impact on the size of the future fish you may decide to purchase. Normally, it makes the most sense to select larger docile fish and smaller aggressive species. A word to the wise would be to refrain from incorporating the most aggressive fish into your tanks bioload, making it the last fish purchased for your tank.
The species of fish needs to be considered in the purchasing process. By this, I mean that, often times, you can't add fish from the same species , especially after becoming adults. Two examples of this would be, adding multiple Zebrasoma Tangs or Centropyge Angelfish to your tank. This decision often leads to disastrous results and the demise of one or both of the participating inhabitants.
Crowding your aquarium is not recommended. Not only can this hinder water quality but can lead to aggressive behavior displayed by your livestock. The general rule is one inch of fish, not including the tail of the fish, per every three gallons of water.
The last factor that needs to be addressed regarding the purchasing process, providing the best chance of success is store personnel and husbandry ethics. This includes the knowledge, personality and willingness to listen to there customers wants, needs, questions and concerns. Taking the time to talk to you, while displaying interest in what you have to say, should be important to you as a potential buyer. Taking the time to literally show you that a fish is eating by providing it with brine shrimp is just one simple step requiring little time that can make all the difference in the world as to whether, or not, a sale is made.
Have you ever gone into a pet shop and initially noticed sick or dead fish in their tanks, where algae growth, dust and salt creep inundated the overall aesthetics of the fish department instead of the livestock, color and diversity. If the store is not being maintained adequately, how do you think their livestock is being provided for?
