Seachem Purigen Organic Filtration Resin - Fresh and Saltwater 100 ml

- FILTRATION: Purigen ranges in color from almost white (cream) to light yellow. Seachem Purigen is not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water.
- SELECTIVITY: Seachem Purigen is an organic filtration resin that works hard to remove nitrogenous compounds and waste produced by fish, corals, and even plants, making your water crystal clear.
- CAPACITY: Being both spherical and macroreticular, Seachem Purigen has microscopic pores that increase its usable surface area to many times that of a purely spherical resin.
- REGENERATION: Once Seachem’s Purigen is exhausted, it can be regenerated with a solution of bleach and water. The bleach will literally “burn off” the organics that have been removed from the tank.
- SAFETY: Some slime coat products may permanently foul Purigen and render regeneration difficult. Do not reuse if odor of bleach/chlorine is detectable. In case of doubt, soak beads in small quantity of water and test for residual chlorine with a chlorine test kit.

The Hazards of Using Nitrogen Based Fertilizer
Did you know that nitrates could be lurking in your garden produce? Consuming too much is bad for you in any form. Yes, even when that form is fresh garden produce.
Why are nitrates so bad for you, nutritionally?
The evidence proving nitrates are bad for you is overwhelming. When nitrates leech into our water supply, they can cause cancer and other health issues. In the garden, plants use nitrogen for growth. When too much nitrogen is used, your garden produce has high concentrations of nitrates too. You are what you eat, as they say.
Boosting growth isn't always a good thing.
Nitrates used to fertilize cause other problems too. They can negatively impact our ecosystem. It's not just our drinking water that suffers. Nitrates are very efficient fertilizers. They can can cause algae overgrowth in pond and streams. They rob water of oxygen. That leaves nothing for you and I. They also leave nothing for the fish and other species that inhabit the water.
How can you decrease nitrates in garden produce?
*Use nitrogen based fertilizer sparingly. The more you use, the more nitrates there will be in your produce.
*Eat tender baby leaves. The outer leaves of salad greens contain more nitrates.
*Harvest root vegetables in the afternoon. They contain more nitrates earlier in the day.
How do nitrates cause cancer?
It isn't the nitrates themselves that cause cancer. It's what happens to them when we eat them. When we digest our food, nitrates produce nitrosamines. Simply put, the nitrogen in the fertilizer turns to nitrates in garden produce and our water supply. When ingested, the nitrates turn to nitrosamines. The nitrosamines cause cancer.
Note: Eating a diet rich in vitamin C can help lessen the formation of nitrosamines in the body.
Is organic fertilizer safe to use?
If you're concerned about nitrate consumption and run-off, your best bet is to use compost you make yourself. Many organic gardeners use manure. While it is all natural, it's also quite high in nitrates. It does reduce the amount of man-made chemicals in the garden. It doesn't reduce, and may intensify the amount of nitrates.
