Max O'Well Visits Florida's Tampa Bay Aquarium

Florida's Tampa Bay Aquarium is one of the nicest aquariums just about anywhere. Although there are larger ones around the country, the relationship with the Lowry Park Zoo provides extra value in this aquarium.

I have been to this aquarium quite some years back. At the time it seemed like the type of small aquarium that you would see on the side of a tourist street. At least that's how I remember it.

Wow! The aquarium was much larger under a huge dome. It had a large parking lot with a pond with a few visiting native birds outside. Behind the aquarium a large cruise ship was berthed. The ship was called the Miracle and each of the numerous life boats that lined it had a number and the word Miracle on them.

Originally I headed from the car to building beside the aquarium but my brother steered me to the modern domed building. In from the building has a huge Manta Ray which should have given me a clue. Some of us are just naturally slow.

To enter the Aquarium we had to pay the piper.

My brother had a two for one coupon so it cost us just $17.95 for two. Normal price for adults under 60 is $17.95 each; over 60 $14.95; children under 12 $12.95; and under 2 years FREE.

If you have a group or want to try their Eco-Tour there is contact information at the end of this article. As I point out, if you live in the area they have special offers from time to time.

The Aquarium:

It was about 10:30 am when we entered the aquarium. We passed through some bird exhibits first. Yes, I know it says it is an aquarium. But it has a lot more than just fish in this aquarium. It is themed on the idea of showing the creatures dependent on water to some extent, as well as fish that inhabit the water.

We saw ducks, wading birds, Gars (a long fish), turtles and Florida's resident favorite, Alligators. With only a thin (perhaps 1/2inch) piece of glass between us and the gators we could see them excellently.

Because the bottom of the alligator tank is above the floor level you get a great 360 view of the entire animal. Several gators hung in the water with their snouts above the water and the rest of them under the water.

We spent some time at the alligator exhibit. But then we went on to see more exhibits. There were otters (my brothers granddaughter Karina's favorite), storks, more ducks, storks and a tank cleaner in scuba gear.

The fish and birds can't come out of the exhibits so the aquarium staff has to go in to keep the tanks clean and the inhabitants healthy. They have to use care that they don't accidentally injure the critters in the tank. I didn't ask who got the short straw and had to clean the alligator tank.

We visited the small fish area. On the way I saw a tank that contained Upside-Down Jelly Fish. They look exactly like jelly fish (because they are) but have this need to swim downward in the water. In the ocean the water is probably deep enough that they never hit the bottom. In the tank they were busy pressing themselves into the sand at the bottom of the tank. They are very strange creatures indeed.

Next we saw a goldfish that looked like it had water wings. On each side of its mouth it had what looked like a bubble in a sack. Perhaps it just didn't know how to swim yet, but it appeared to be doing okay.

It was now 11am so we rushed down to the aquariums theater to see the Truth or Tails presentation.

We sat in the last row so the shorter folks would be able to see.

What a surprise when a talking skunk came out to introduce the show. I could swear its mouth was moving as the details of the show we would see were described. We thought it might be a Muppet type critter. No way when it left the stage it made sure we knew it was a real very live skunk. It even suggested we behave or suffer the consequences. (if you get my drift)

A young lady appeared next on the stage and introduced a few Florida critters. There was a duck, an eagle, and an owl. The owl required audience participation so we could learn some facts about owls.

Next a second young woman appeared holding an alligator. She told us that there were a million alligators in Florida. She also suggested that swimming with alligators or in areas where alligators live was not a particularly good idea.

The first young women returned as the alligator left the stage. She brought out a nine banded armadillo and shared some interesting facts about armadillos. Then she called her Barn Owl out onto the stage. She did an audience participation event with the owl. The owl moved about the stage flying from perch to glove and to the next perch.

The second young lady returned as soon as the owl had flow off the stage. She was holding a large snake. She offered one young lady in the audience an opportunity to help her but the young lady deferred. A young lady finally helped her show some facts about the snake.

The original presenter came back and showed us an Opossum what most of us just call a possum. The opossum followed a path across the stage wall that allowed everyone to see it well. This was the end of the show.

The young lady with the snake returned so that all the kids (and adults) that wanted to touch it or had questions could see it closer.

We went off to see the larger tanks. Yes we wanted to see the sharks. What is a visit to the aquarium without sharks?

We got to see sharks, eels, more jelly fish, (right way up) many birds, sting rays, (that can be touched), lobsters, and my favorite Nemo. (or it could have been his brother)

In the large tank they did indeed have sharks and many other types of fishes. They also had something special, people. It seems they have times when a few people can swim with the fishes. Due to the corral in the tanks the swimmers are limited to sort of floating on the top of the tank.

It really didn't matter; the fish were coming right up to the people. They were probably curious what those strange awkward creatures were and what they might be doing in their tank.

The museum also has a very large area for children and the young at heart to play in the water. It even includes water cannons. A family could easily spend the entire day here given all the exhibits and shows. It is a far cry from the place I visited some years back.
