How to Make Your Own Freshwater Pearl Earrings
Maximize your accessories by learning a simple method to making your own earrings.
Few things are classier than a string of pearls or a set of pearl earrings. However, for many of us in this economy, it is hard to imagine going to our local jeweler to buy a set of pearl jewelry. That is why making your own freshwater pearl earrings is such a great option. These freshwater pearl earrings are so versatile. They're casual enough to wear every day and yet elegant enough to wear on special occasions. The great news is that you don't have to be especially crafty to make these beautiful pieces. Once you learn the method, the options will be endless as to the different kinds of earrings you'll be able to make.
Making your own jewelry will help to expand your fashion options without hurting your budget. You can find strings of freshwater pearls on Internet auction sites for reasonable prices. Some freshwater pearls will be naturally colored, others may be painted. If this makes a difference to you, ask the online seller about whether or not the pearls have been painted before purchasing.
When making freshwater pearl earrings, sizes matter. A freshwater pearl that is around 6-8mm will be large enough to stand out while still looking graceful and delicate. Normally, you should also be able to use sturdier wire with beads this size since the holes will be larger. Again, it is always good to ask the seller what gauge wire is best to use for the pearls before purchasing.
When choosing jewelry wire for earrings, it is best to use the thickest gauge that will fit in the hole of your beads. If the wire is too thin, your earrings will be flimsy. A thicker wire will keep your earrings strong. Remember, the higher the wire gauge, the thinner the wire. A standard sized wire for beading is 22 ga. This size should fit into most holes of any bead. However, pearls often have smaller holes than most beads. This is why it is best to ask the seller about the size of the bead hole. A 0.65mm hole will fit 22 ga wire, a 0.5mm hole will fit 24 ga wire, a 0.4mm hole will fit 26 ga wire and a 0.3mm hole will fit 28 ga wire.
Once you have purchased your pearls and found out what size wire is best for your project, you can gather the rest of the tools you will need to make your earrings. These can be found at your local craft store. Before beginning your earrings you should have the following:
• Wire cutters
• Pliers
• Beading wire
• Earring hooks or ear wires
• "Crimp" beads
• Six freshwater pearl beads
*Note: Make sure that all your metals match. If your earring hooks are silver, use silver wire and silver crimp beads.
1. Using your wire cutters, cut two 2 inch strips of wire.
2. Place your pliers at the tip of one of your strips of wire. Curl your pliers in a downward motion so that the wire forms a loop. Keep the loop unclosed.
3. Fit the loop of the wire into the loop at the end of the earring hook. Use your pliers to close the loop of the wire so it is secure on the earring hook. (You may need to secure the loop of the earring hook with your pliers as well.)
4. String three freshwater pearls onto the wire.
5. String your crimp bead at the end of the wire. Hold snugly in place against the last pearl.
6. Use your pliers to "crimp" the bead closed.
7. Cut off the excess wire with your wire cutters.
8. Repeat steps 2 through 7 for your other earring.
Now you have a set of beautiful of freshwater pearl earrings. Wear them to dress up dark denim jeans and a blouse for a date. Or wear them with a little black dress to a wedding. No matter how you choose to use them, you can be sure that these pearls will help you to achieve a timeless, classic look.
