What is a Protein Skimmer for a Saltwater Tank and How Do I Use It?
A protein skimmer removes harmful elements from the water.
The protein skimmer is like an extra addition to your current filtration system. Your canister filter should never be replaced with a protein skimmer. You cannot run a protein skimmer all day long because the wooden diffuser will quickly clog up and you will need to purchase one every couple of days. You can try to clean them but the little airways will become permanently clogged. You can purchase new wooden air diffusers from the place that you purchased your protein skimmer from.
Protein skimmers will usually vary in price depending on how big your aquarium is. If you have a forty gallon aquarium you will spend about $100 on a good protein skimmer. The price will be closer to $200 if you have a larger saltwater fish tank. If you've ever seen a tube which is hooked up to the side of a saltwater tank and there are tubes running in and out of the tube with bubbles forming inside of the tube, this is a protein skimmer. They are somewhat difficult to hook up and it will probably take a little bit of trial and error. You will need to purchase airline tubing if the protein skimmer does not come with some. You will need airline tubing which is long enough to go from the tube to the bottom of your tank and back up again. You will need two separate airline tubes.
You will run one tube down into the protein skimmer which will hook up to the bottom piece of the protein skimmer. You will then have a separate airline tube which runs from the wooden air diffuser back up to the protein skimmer. You will need a bubbler which has two different air valves with two hookups for your airline tubes. You will need to follow the directions and keep adjusting the hookups to the bubbler. By turning the knobs you will be adjusting the air flow. If the bubbles moving through your airline tube are moving too quickly you will need to start completely over. The foam does not start to form until about five minutes after you hook up the protein skimmer, so if you don't see foam right away don't be alarmed. If after five minutes you do not see foam, you need to move the protein skimmer down about 1/2 inch until you start to see foam, if you did everything correctly.
