Basic Aquarium Care

Aquariums are a lovely addition to a home. However, to keep it nice-looking with healthy fish, you need to practice basic aquarium care. Here are things you can do on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

Daily Cleaning Regimen

- Check the temperature of the water. You should maintain it at a steady level. The ideal temperature depends on the kind of fish you are rearing. If you have tropical freshwater fish, a temperature of around 77 degrees Fahrenheit is recommended. Too much warmth will result in algae growth. If the temperature changes suddenly, the fish will get shocked and fall sick. Check the location of your aquarium. The best place is near a window because it is exposed to indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause water temperature to rise. Make sure to monitor your aquarium's temperature using a floating thermometer or a temperature strip.

- Check often for sick or dead fish because you have to remove them quickly or the whole aquarium will be contaminated.

- Check the pump and filters to see that they are working properly.

- Don't feed your fish too much. Uneaten fish food will rot and upset the aquarium's chemistry. Remove excess food with a fine net or siphon.

- To have a clear view of your fish, wipe the outside of your aquarium with a damp cloth. It is not a good idea to use ammonium sprays such as Windex. You may end up killing your fish instead.

Weekly To Do List

- Change the aquarium water. Don't change all of it, just draw out about 25%. This is enough to get rid of the toxic nitrate in the water. Don't forget your fish has already grown accustomed to the "old" water. If you change too much, you might stress out your fish because you would have changed the temperature, the mix of chemicals and even the ideal amount of waste. It is very important that you provide the right chemical content in the water. The new water that you pour in should be treated for chlorine and ammonia first. You can get water conditioners and pH buffers at the pet shop to help you prepare the right kind of water for your fish. Your fish will die if ammonia and chlorine levels get too high. Another way to condition water is to let new water sit for about 1-2 weeks before using it.

- Siphon out all contamination found at the bottom of the aquarium.

- Check on your live plants too, if you have any. Throw out sick or dead leaves and trim them when necessary. You don't want them growing out of control.

Monthly Cleaning Task

- Clean the filter and change the filter cartridge. You don't have to do too good a job of it. Clean it too well and you will end up removing useful bacteria that helps keep the water's chemical equilibrium.

- Scrape off all algae from the aquarium. A scraper helps get the job done. If you want to control the growth of the algae, consider algae eating fish such as the sucker fish, mollies and catfish.

- Make sure you are not using cleaning supplies that kill your fish. Did you know most household sponges and cleaning supplies are not suitable for aquarium maintenance? It's better you buy proper cleaning supplies from your pet store.

When you clean your aquarium, you don't have to take the fish out. Just leave them in there. Commit yourself to doing basic aquarium care. Purposely put aside time to clean it. Don't say "I'll do it if time permits." Through proper care and nurture, your aquarium will be a constant joy to look at. I'm sure the fishes will be grateful too.
