Using Artificial Plants with Betta Fish
Bettas or Siamese fighting fish do well with artificial plants. But make sure the plant does not interfere with tank lids and that it has smooth edges.
So many betta keepers choose artificial plants as they require less care than live plants. Live plants need particular lighting, food and pruning - all of which may conflict with the betta's needs. Artificial plants can also be used to help show off the betta and act as a hiding place for the fish. But don't just stick any artifical plant in with a betta. Make sure the plant will not harm your fish.
Size of Tank
Plastic artificial plants are a must for bettas kept in bowls or tanks less than two gallons large. Live plants, in contrast, require a deep bed of substrate or gravel in order to place their roots and draw in nutrition. Many small artificial plants fit into even these tiny homes.
If the plants prove to be too tall for the bowl or tank, the tops can be cut or snapped off. If the artificial plant pushes against the tank lid, snap some off. Ideally all bowls or tanks should have aerated lids because bettas are prone to jumping out of their homes, landing on the floor and dying, according to "Aquarium Care of Bettas" (TFH Publications; 2020.)
Selection of Fake Plants
Artificial plants selected for betta tanks need to not only fit the tank but have smooth edges. Any plants with sharp or rough edges need to be discarded as the fish may injure itself against the plant. After snapping off part of plant that is too long for the tank, check the edge. If it's sharp, it's better to write the plant off as a loss and toss it than risk injury to your fish, which is irreplaceable.
Startled bettas can swim directly into plants and cause minor abrasions or lose scales. Plants with smooth edges are made from plastic, silk or a combination of both. Artificial plants with long leaves instead of those that look like little ivy bushes or pine tree branches do best. Ideally, leaves should be made of silk, but this writer has a purple and white plant where her current female betta likes to hide in and take naps.
Dark plants can set off light-colored bettas while light plants compliment dark-colored bettas. Red bettas seem to go with just about any natural colored plant on the market.
What About Floating Plants?
Floating artificial plants are harder to find than plants that need to be placed into gravel, but they are made. Floating plants encourage male bettas to make a bubblenest where fertilized eggs are placed after spawning. If trying to breed bettas, it is imperative that the male has a bubblenest ready in order to court a female. Otherwise, he may wind up killing the female instead of procreating.
They also can act as a floating hiding place for a betta. The betta's wild relatives, consisting of many species native to Thailand, Malaysia and neighboring countries, live in shallow swamplands underneath floating plants. The fish hide under the plants, dart out to eat prey like insect larvae and go back to hide again. Today's pet bettas, although far more ornate than their wild cousins, still act wild. Floating artificial plants can help mimic their natural behaviors.
Maintenance
Algae will grow on artificial plants. Algae can be green or brown. Remove an algae-covered plant and scrub the algae off with a brush only used for removing algae in the inside of the bowl or tank. Never use bleach, soaps or detergents for the brush, tank or plant as the residues from these substances will kill the fish. Just water, the brush and some elbow grease will be sufficient.
"Aquarium Care of Bettas" points out that a little aglae in a tank will not harm the fish. So do not panic if one side of a plant appears dusted in green or brown snow. But if you look into the tank and can barely see your betta through what seems to be a thin pea soup, then it's time to get cracking.
