Feeding Betta Fish - a Guide to Nutrition
Learn how to feed you betta safely and to keep him healthy and happy.
Betta fish Feeding Manual - Amount of food
When dispensing food to Betta, make sure not to overfeed them. Adult Betta fish should eat no more than once per day, while Betta fries should be fed twice per day. Attempt to dispense as much food as they can consume in about two minutes. If there is still food floating around after three minutes, it is likely that this food will sink and may eventually help to grow bacteria that has the potential to harm your Betta fish.
It's also healthy to refrain from feeding your Betta fish once per week (always on the same day). This allows the fish's digestive system a chance to stay healthy and clean itself out. If you are planning on staying away longer than two days, have a caretaker give him food or buy an auto fish feeder.
Feeding Betta Fish - Commercial Food
Most store bought Betta fish food pellets are a mix of mushed up shrimp, fish, brine shrimp, wheat flour, bloodworms and essential vitamins. This is a safe and easy way to feed him. Frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp are also terrific, safe and simple choices (although your Betta prefers live food). Even though giving them live insects is fun to watch, freeze dried food is protected from parasites and will usually be safer.
Feeding Betta fish - Live Food
One more option is to feed your Betta live food, for example, red or black mosquito larvae (known as bloodworms) or live brown worms. If providing your Betta fish live insects, make sure to wash the food before dispensing it, otherwise your Betta could get sick and possibly die. Insects you've caught in your garden aren't a safe choice, because they could have been near pesticides and other dangerous elements that have the potential to really harm your Betta fish. It is extremely important not to overfeed your Betta fish live insects. While they will allow uneaten pellets sink to the bottom of the tank, a Betta fish will not stop consuming live insects and can even eat himself to death!
Betta Feeding Manual - Special Circumstances
If you're planning on mating two Betta's, you must give them richer foods like Grindal or blackworms, fruit flies, brine shrimp, etc.. Be certain to take a look at the Betta fish reproduction manual to find out more about their diet requirements and additional information on Betta spawning. You can feed a fully grown Betta fish as many as times a day if you are expecting to mating them. When feeding Betta fish fries, you should begin around five days after spawning. You can feed the babies |several times a day. Boiled egg yolk, baby brine shrimp, and infusoria are all excellent choices.
