How to Clean an Aquarium Canister Filter

Aquarium canister filters are one of the older types of fish tank cleaning system. Because of its position inside the aquarium, canister filter cleaning requires special care.

What is an aquarium canister filter anyway? A canister filter is a plastic box with open slots where the water can flow through and attachments for an air tube. The box is filled with activated aquarium charcoal, some sort of floss or batting to catch particulate matter, and sunk into the aquarium itself. Either suction or the bubbling of an air tube creates the flow of water through the filter media.

Clean the Aquarium Canister Filter - When Should You Clean It?

If black and green slime is hanging out of the aquarium canister filter, you should have cleaned it weeks ago. While some amount of bacterial and algae build up is normal and even desired, the canister filter should not become an eyesore. By that time, its efficiency has been lost. As a rule, the canister filter should be removed and cleaned once per week. More frequent cleaning will be necessary if your aquarium bio-load is high.

Clean the Aquarium Canister Filter - Removing it From the Tank

The best rule for removing the aquarium canister filter is to be careful. You should be sure to put your hand over the top of the canister filter that opens. The last thing you want is to have the sludge on the top of the floss medium to escape from the filter and slosh about your fish tank.

Raise the aquarium canister filter carefully and let the water drain out of the bottom at a natural rate. This will help ensure that the minimum of waste materials falls back into the water.

Clean the Aquarium Canister Filter - Which Part to Clean, Which Part to Leave

Most aquarium canister filters have several media types within them. The activated charcoal can be rinsed, but never scrubbed. If there are bio-balls or other 3-D media types, they should not be scrubbed either. These are the places where the beneficial bacteria colonize in an aquarium canister filter.

The fluffy or flossy filter media should be discarded completely and the filter should be packed with new. This is only responsible for physical filtration: removing the floating particles from the water.

Clean the Aquarium Canister Filter - Putting it Back in the Tank

After you have cleaned the aquarium canister filter, it is time to hook the hoses back up to it and put it back in the tank. This is the perfect time for a quick vacuum of the aquarium gravel. Let the aquarium canister filter fill slowly with water and sink naturally to the bottom of the tank. Be sure to have the air hose attached, plug it in, and it will resume its normal function.
