The Ultimate Guide to Keeping Crayfish as Aquarium Pets

Crayfish are great additions to any tank and easy to take care of.

In the Southeast, specifically Louisiana, they are considered a delicacy. But what many people don't know is that they are a great addition to fish tanks and are very easy to take care of.

They are also entertaining to watch as they interact with fish, scour for food, and crawl around the tank. Here's what you need to know to get started with owning a crayfish in your tank in an easy-to-follow Q amp; A format.

Q: How much attention do crayfish need in my fish tank?

A: Not very much. Crayfish generally can be left on their own and don't require as much attention as regular fish.

Q: What does the crayfish need in order to make a comfortable home in my tank?

A: Crayfish are solitary creatures during the day and are active at night. They prefer to hide under rocks in the wild while keeping their vulnerable backs protected. Therefore, it is necessary to provide them with a hollow rock or decoration so they can hide out in there and feel safe from other fish.

Also, A water pH level of 7.0 neutral and a temperature between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit is recommended. Heated tanks are not necessary but a filter is a good idea.

Q: What do crayfish eat?

A: In the wild, crayfish are scavengers that roam the bottom of the lake/river for food and slow-moving fish. In a fish tank, the best food for them is a shrimp pellet, a sinking compressed food that will remain on the bottom of the tank. Fish eat shrimp pellets too so make sure you drop enough of them into or around the crayfish's hiding place. They also may eat some flakes that sink to the bottom but this is not considered a good staple food for them.

Q: Are crayfish a threat to the fish in my tank?

A: For most fish, the answer is no. But the bigger crayfish do pose a threat to slower, bottom-swimming fish. Algae eaters seem to get along well with them, however. Crayfish will also kill weakened or sick fish that get too close to the bottom. But in most cases, those fish will end up dying on their own, anyway.

Q: How much do crayfish cost and where can I obtain them?

A: Many tropical fish stores or pet stores sell crayfish in areas where there are fresh bodies of water. Regular red ones usually go for one to three dollars. Other fancier species like various blue types and other unique colors can go for 20 dollars and up.

The Web site www.bluecrayfish.com sells blue crayfish for between 10 and 28 dollars depending on the type. They add a nice splash of color to any tank.

Also, sites like www.aquabids.com have auctions for fancy, rare crayfish from places like Australia and Great Britain with beautiful colors and patterns. But these can go for high prices in the 50-100 dollar range. There is also an extremely rare white breed that I've seen go for 99 dollars. The diversity of crayfish colors and types is what makes them an interesting pet to collect for your tank, however.

Q: What about catching crayfish in the wild? Is this a good idea?

A: Absolutely, and this is something I had a lot of fun doing while growing up on vacation in Northern Michigan. To catch a crayfish, simply find a shallow area with lots of rocks in a fresh body of water. Begin turning over the rocks and keep your eyes peeled for sudden movements. Crayfish move at one of two speeds: either very slow or very fast. They have what basically amounts to turbo boosters on their backs.

Many rocks in fresh water will have crayfish underneath them. To catch them, place a small net behind them and poke them a bit from the front and they will "turbo" into the net.

I have found many interesting crayfish and taken them back to my fish tank, and many of them survived for long periods of time in captivity.

To keep a crayfish alive while in transit from lake to tank, place it in shallow water just slightly above its head. Too much standing water between the head and the surface will create air pockets that will kill the crayfish.

Q: How many crayfish can I have in one tank?

A: It is recommended that you only put one crayfish per ten gallons of tank water. Also, do not mix different species of crayfish as they will fight and end up killing each other.

Q: Anything else I need to know?

A: Yes, do not put crayfish in a tank with live plants. Crayfish will latch themselves onto the plants and feast on them until they are gone. Hey, nobody said they were perfect.

Q: Okay, so why do I want to put a crayfish in my tank again?

A: Because they interesting, in my humble opinion. Since my last one died, the tank simply is not the same. They are fun to watch because they constantly hunt fish and pretty much never succeed. They also like to take the gravel from the bottom of the tank and build hills and other features with it. They will liven up any boring old fish tank, guaranteed.
