How to Set Up a Fresh Water Fish Tank in Five Easy Steps
Find out how to easily set up your new fish tank. What you will need to have and some good advice to make things easier.
After you have picked out your fish tank and brought it home, remove it from the box. The fish tank will have to be rinsed out before filling it with water. This will remove any foreign particles that might otherwise harm your fish. If it is a small fish tank such as 10 a gallon, you can rinse it out in most sinks. If it is a large fish tank such as a 55 gallon, get someone to help you bring it outside. Set the fish tank on its side. Make sure to place a piece of cardboard or a thick towel underneath the tank! This will prevent the glass from scratching. Rinse the fish tank out with a garden hose and bring it back inside.
Place the tank on a sturdy stand. Make sure that the stand is capable of holding the weight of both the fish tank and the water. You will want to put the fish tank and the stand where it will be permanently. Once it's filled with water the tank will be difficult to move. You will need to replicate the fishes environment by adding the appropriate gravel, rocks and plants.
Gravel
Rinse the gravel or stones that you are using before adding them to the fish tank. This will remove any unsafe chemicals that are left on them from factories and warehouses. Evenly spread the rocks around the fish tank.
Plants
Adding plants to your fish tank is a good idea for several reasons. It replicates the fishes environment and also gives your fish a place to hide when their not feeling very social. Rinse the plants in the same way as the gravel with some tap water. Place the plants wherever you think they look best. Remember to weigh them down with some gravel or something or else they will float to the top when you add the water.
Water
Once the fish tank is in place, and the plants and gravel have been added, start filling it with water. If your using tap water and have a garden hose it may be easier to bring the hose to the tank to fill it. Rather than filling up jug after jug of water and carting it back and forth. You will want to let the water sit for about a day before adding fish so it will be room tempture.
Filter
Rinse out the filter box, filter, and filter parts. Put the filter together according to the instructions. Place it on the back of the fish tank and fill the filter box with water. Adding water first primes the filter and gets it to work faster. Plug the filter in and add more water if necessary to get it going.
Chemicals
The water in your fish tank needs to be safe for the fish to swim in. To make the tap water safe you could use a product such as Aqua Safe for example. If you haven't already, go purchase some test strips. The test strips will test the water for nitrates, chlorine, and alkalinity to name a few.
Now your fish tank is all set. You are now ready to go out and get your fish. Carefully put them into there new home. See how happy they are!
