Lion Fish Invasion Threatens Life in the Atlantic Ocean
Six lion fish that washed out of an aquarium during a hurricane have caused this population explosion that is threatening the ocean life in the Atlantic.
It is hard to fathom that a half-dozen venomous lion fish being washed into the Atlantic Ocean has caused an invasion that could kill off an industry along with the native fish.
Oregon State University zoology professor, Mark Hixon, said that the lion fish started showing up in the Bahamas in 2005. No one paid too much attention to these few stragglers of this type of fish at that time, but by 2020 the population had exploded.
Lion fish are native to the Indian and Pacific oceans. In the past few years they have spread up the eastern seaboard of the United States and the Caribbean. They are exploding in population in the Bahamas.
They are a beautiful sight to see with their detailed coloring and flowing fin like spines that resemble a lion's mane. But this eye pleasing aquatic dweller is becoming alarmingly dangerous to the environment. This venomous lion fish can kill a reef's population in no time. Three quarters of a reef's fish population can be killed off in just five weeks by these deadly fish according to one sturdy.
Hixon had been in this area of the Bahamas doing fish studies on the native fish for over two decades. He reports that they had to start to study the lion fish because they were eating all the other fish that Hixon and his colleagues were studying. He goes on to say that there was nothing else that could be done. The hardest hit area by this invasion is the Bahamas.
True to their names, the lion fish are ferocious predators very much like a lion. They are easy to spot with their detailed red and white spots. Their tall venomous spines flow out from their back and the sting from these can be extremely painful to anyone that comes in contact with them. These spines are used to kill their pray. They eat any living fish life including the shell fish.
There is nothing to stop this explosion of Lion fish except for humans fishing or spearing them out of the water. Hixon reports that there is just so many that can be caught this way. Now they are studying the lion fish in their native habituate of the Pacific to understand what keeps the population in check there.
The people that live on these islands in the Bahamas make their living from fishing these waters and unless the population explosion of the lion fish can be slowed down, this industry is in danger. The tourist industry will also suffer if the illumination of the native fish continues from the lion fish eating them all. People will start vacationing in other places where the diving offers plenty of fish life to view while exploring the under water reefs. The lion fish invasion has caused major problems for this area.
There is nothing in the Atlantic waters that will feed off of lion fish. Until a parasite or another species of fish start to feed off the lion fish it is left up to humans to try and get this problem under control. The lion fish lay as many as 20,000 eggs at one time. At this rate the population will never stop growing. Lion fish are an Asian delicacy, but not in the area of the Bahamas. There is a push on to get the people of this area to start fishing for the lion fish for eating. The spines on this fish are the biggest deterrent for people to start doing this. Until a natural control kicks in it will remain a problem for the people with the only defense to fight this population explosion being fishing them out of the ocean.
