Houston Aquarium: Homeschool Field Trip Under the Sea

Homeschool curriculums typically cover the ocean and the Houston Aquarium is a great stop for a field trip. The aquarium provides an up-close and personal view into the ocean and all it has to offer.

Most homeschool curriculum includes a unit on the ocean, seas and creators of the deep for all grades. The Houston Aquarium is an unique field trip which brings each species of fish, amphibian and reptile up-close and personal. Every exhibit in the aquarium transports children to different areas under the sea.

Some of the exhibits include; a shipwreck, the Louisiana swamp, the rainforest, the Gulf of Mexico and a sunken temple. In one exhibit, children are encouraged to touch fish, stingrays, horseshoe crabs and starfish. Though the aquarium includes colorful and lively creatures, the highlight of the visit is the aquarium's white tigers. These glorious creatures were active, majestic and stunning to watch. Unlike a visit to the zoo, these tigers are housed in a temple enclosure and are easily viewed.

After a visit to the aquarium, families can purchase a ticket to board a train for the Shark Voyage. This train settles the riders under a shark tank which houses Sand Tiger Sharks, Nurse Sharks, White tip Sharks, Black Tip Sharks and a Sawfish. Watching sharks swim overhead and circling around the train is a thrilling sight.

The Houston Aquarium also hosts a Mommy amp; Me program on Monday, from 10-11 a.m., for younger members of a homeschooling family. Toddlers, ages 2-5, are able to visit the aquarium, attend an animal story time and make a craft. Afterwards, they can enjoy the rest of the aquarium at their leisure. The cost of the program is $12.99 for 1 parent and 1 child. There is a $2.00 charge for each additional child.

Other programs offered by the aquarium include; Marine Biologist For A Day, Zoologist For A Day, Wild Dreams Overnight, Sea Safari Camp and Explor-Oceans Camp. Please visit the website or call (713) 223-FISH for more information.

The Houston Aquarium is open Sunday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
