Setting Up a Tropical Fish Aquarium
The attraction of creating a community aquarium is that fish and plants from all over the world can be brought together. Your aquarium can focus on natural habitats and providing the ideal environment for a wide range of aquarium fish
Choose any shape or size of aquarium you like. The bigger the tank the easier it is to keep it clean. You should plan on a 50 to 75 gallon tank if you want to add plants and about 6 adult fish. The cover and privacy of plants will benefit a variety of tropical fish species.
Water temperature is very important and should be kept around 75 degree F and its pH should be about 7 to 7.6. Use tap water as long as it's not excessively hard or soft. Standard lighting is acceptable for a community tank.
Buying Fish
Your best bet would be to go to your local library or book store to familiarize your self with aquarium fish. You'll need to know what type of environment they prefer, their compatibility to other species, and what type of food to feed them. Once you have made a choice, you'll know what size of aquarium you'll need and whether to include plants.
Stocking Levels
To determine the maximum stocking levels, measure the surface area water by the fish body length. Acceptable levels are usually 1 inch body length to 10 to 12 square inch of water surface. It's not advisable to start out with the maximum amount but to add slowly to your collection. Tropical fish dealers usually sell juvenile fish and they will increase in size as they mature.
Compatibility of Fish Species
To ensure the compatibility of your selection of fish, check with your aquarium dealer before buying. Some species will fight with other fish especially at breeding time while other species will only become aggressive if they are isolated from members of their own species.
Transporting Fish
Have your tank set up before you purchase your tropical fish. You'll transport your fish home in a plastic bag and the water can become cool. It can be extremely stressful for the fish is left too long in these conditions. If you have an established tank you may want to consider putting new fish in a quarantine tank for a few weeks before adding them to the main tank.
Place the bag of fish in the tank and allow the temperature of the water in the bag to rise to the temperature of the water in the tank. Open the bag and try to get the fish out with a net, try not to allow too much of the water from the bag to get into the tank, it may contain bacteria. Be careful not to catch the fins of the fish in the netting.
Before you set up your first aquarium think about what tropical fish you want to include and create a comfortable habitat for that particular species. The key thing to remember is not to overload your tank with a lot of plants or over crowd you tank with too many fish. Create a bit of nature to lift your spirits, and calm your nerves.
