Aquaponics: 4 Easy and Affordable Ways to Build Your Own Aquaponic System and Raise Fish and Plants Together (Urban Homesteading Book 6)
Swim, Grow and Make Your Own Ebb and Flow Aquaponics System
Aquaponics is the combination of raising fish with hydroponics. It's a fun and easy project to build your own ebb and flow aquaponics system. You'll love that you can watch and feed your fish while enjoying your own plants.
There are some things that you will need to gather together. Of course you'll need an aquarium with some fish. You'll need 1 or 2 plastic dish pans. You can use kitty litter pans or cement mixing trays here as well. You will want an aquarium water pump for each grow bed you plan on using.
You'll need tubing that fits the water pumps for your ebb and flow aquaponics system. A craft iron and a piece of window screen is next on the list. You'll want appliance timers, one for each grow bed and some sealant for the aquariums. Get enough washed gravel to fill up your dish pans to ¾ full. Now that you have all of your items gathered you can begin the fun part of making your ebb and flow aquaponics system.
The first step is placing your grow beds higher than where your fish tank is. You might be tempted to set them on the tank. But if you want to get in the tank to feed and maintain it, sitting them on a shelf above the tank is better.
The next step is to use your craft iron to burn 2 holes into the containers you are using for grow beds. You need to put the containers wherever they are going to sit. Wherever you sit the grow beds, will be the determining factor in where you place the tubing access.
Now you'll want to make a hole in the bottom of the tub with the craft iron. You don't want it to be obvious or in your way. Make the hole only large enough to insert the tubing from the outside of the tub to the inside of it. This tubing is how the water gets into your grow bed, and where you've place the tube will decide where the water level will be after draining.
A second hole will need to be made about ¼ inch below the top of your tub and this is for overflow. You also don't want this hole to be obvious. It needs to be just large enough for the tubing as well.
You want to follow all the above directions for each grow bed you intend on having.
Placement is how you will decide on the length of the tubing you'll use. Measure from the tubs to where the pump is in your fish tank and add 4 inches. You'll need four lengths of tubing.
Place the tubing in the holes inside the grow beds. Make sure there is an inch inside. Seal inside and outside of the tubing with the aquarium sealant. This should dry for about 4 hours. You're on your way to seeing the basics of your own ebb and flow aquaponics system.
After the sealant is dry you want to cover the ends of the tubing with the window screen. You can secure them with rubber bands.
Fill the grow beds with gravel, to just above the tubing on top.
Now you want to attach the aquarium pumps and the timers to each other. The timers should be set to run about 15 minutes at a time, 3 or 4 times per day.
The timers should allow the grow beds to water at different times of the day. This is so it won't run your fish tank dry.
It's time to attach the other end of the tubing to the pumps. If the grow beds are more than six inches above the aquarium you may need to get a stronger pump.
Now you're really going to see the results of making your own ebb and flow aquaponics system. Put your plants into the gravel of the grow beds. Be sure to wash the roots clean if these plants have come from the dirt. There isn't really any limit to the type of plants you can grow in this system. For seed planting just plant in the gravel as if it were dirt.
