Fish Care: Oscars
Oscars are an extremely popular aquarium fish, but also one of the easiest to unwittingly abuse. These fish get huge and have particular space and feeding needs.
Most Oscars are sold at about 2"-3" in size. Make sure you know what you're getting into, these babies grow fast! Oscars reach sizes of about 12"-14" at their adult size. The myth of fish growing only to the size of their aquarium is particularly harmful in these fish, I'll explain why in a moment. Because of their large size, Oscars need a minimum of 65G of water space per fish to live healthy.
These are very aggressive fish that, like most fish, will eat anything that fits into their mouths. What makes this tendency so harmful to possible tank mates in Oscars is that they have exceptionally large mouths in proportion to the rest of their body and will gladly eat things that are too long for their mouth, just so they can get it in well enough. Tank mates for Oscars must be considered very carefully, if you're going to have more than one Oscar in a tank they should be purchased at the same time and be of similar size so their territorial tendencies won't be harmful to other fish. Larger Common Plecos and Synodontis Lace Catfish can do well with Oscars, but bear in mind each fish's space requirements and always watch closely for aggression.
Many people feed their Oscars feeder goldfish or guppies as they do need high-protein diets. This is a good, nutritious food for them but does come with a lot of risks. Namely, live feeder fish bring with them the risk of internal parasites or diseases that can be passed to your Oscar. Ideally, your Oscar should be fed a high-quality cichlid pellet along with meaty foods such as pieces of shrimp, worms or prepared beef heart. Beef heart can be ground up and mixed with shrimp pellets, worms and some unflavored gelatin and then frozen in small portions for a great Oscar food.
As with all large fish, the aquarium that houses an Oscar should be no smaller than twice as wide and four times as long as the fish's length to ensure it has plenty of room to move. The aquarium should have a sturdy hood as Oscars are jumpers, as well as filtration that turns over ten times the aquarium's water volume every hour. This is roughly double the filtration you'd have for most aquarium fish, but the Oscars meaty diet and larger stomachs require much better filtration to keep the water quality up.
I said I'd discuss how harmful the "every fish will grow only to the size of its aquarium" myth is and here it is. Many fish excrete a growth hormone that stops the growth of their entire body when that hormone gets too concentrated in the water. This stunts the growth of those fish and can significantly shorten their life span, but otherwise the fish doesn't show many outward signs of the stunting. Oscars, on the other hand, are different in that stunting can have a deadly consequence that's fatal much faster. When an Oscar's growth hormone gets to a certain concentration only its head stops growing. As the rest of the fish's body grows, its mouth deforms until eventually it is impossible for the fish to eat and he dies. Do some research, there is a plethora of diseases and disorders these fish can and will readily develop from stunting, improper filtration and poor water quality.
These gorgeous fish can live for 15 years or even more. If taken care of properly, these fish will grow into truly magnificent spectacles that you'll be proud to show off to family and friends. Imagine a perfectly-conditioned foot-long fish in a beautiful, well-maintained aquarium as the center piece of your living room or den. It's not hard to make this a reality, just a little bit of research can turn your fish keeping hobby into pure enjoyment for both you and the fish in your care.
