Using Indian Almond Leaves for Betta Fish
You may be wondering, "Should I be using Indian almond leaves for betta fish? What do they do? Won't they make my tank dirty?"
The practice of using Indian almond leaves for betta fish that have immune system problems or skin problems is a favorite tactic of Thailand betta breeders. These breeders claim that the leaves help harden the scales of the fish, which in turn makes the catching of disease through the skin much more difficult. They also use Indian almond leaves for betta fish tank treatment, since they provide good bacteria and lower the pH in a betta tank.
However, finding scientific studies that report any specific beneficial claim, such as the one that says they prevent cancer in bettas, is difficult. I have researched this topic extensively, and the vast majority of instances of using Indian almond leaves for betta fish benefits is reported by betta owners, and has not been studied in a scientific setting.
These leaves are five to seven inches long and brown in color and be purchased at many sites on the web. They are reputed to cure cancer, add antioxidants, lower pH, harden scales, and possess a host of other cures. Many respected breeders use Indian almond leaves for betta fish mating. They seem to increase the probability of breeding in betta fish. For this fact alone, I would try them sparingly. I have found no instances where the leaves actually hurt bettas, or caused any problems, but it seems that the benefits are sometimes reported, and sometimes there seems to be no effect at all.
If an aquarist prepares their betta tank properly, and performs regular maintenance, the use of esoteric methods such as using Indian almond leaves for betta fish water quality regulation need not be used. I have personally raised bettas for twenty years, and have never used them myself. I prefer to use proper tank set-up and maintenance instead, and have had some of my betas live over six years.
