Guide to Starting Your Own 10 Gallon Fish Tank
The how to's on setting up your first fish tank and keeping it up in running without killing fish after fish after fish. Things anyone should know before starting on their own.
First off, pick out your tank but no fish on the same day. Go home set up your tank exactly where you want and how you want it and fill with purified filtered water. It is recommended to let it run with no fish in it for 24 hours; I say 48 hours just to be on the safe side. This will build up the tanks filters and have things moving though out the tank, making it a better environment for the fish when they first arrives. Make sure the temperature is right too, has to stay between 70-80 degrees, get a heater if necessary.
Next, before you go to the store and just pick out the coolest or the prettiest looking fish you need to do your research. A lot of fish don't all get along well together. And you'd think that the pet store would tell you which ones not to mix but really they will let you pick anyone you want knowing that they are going to kill each other when they get in the tank alone together. You want to pick fish that do well in "small groups" have a "friendly nature" or the "schooling" type. Also in most cases it is better to get 2 female to every male type. This will have less stress on the females due to the males being aggressive towards them. And you should know that getting in groups of 2-3 of the same kind at a time is best. Don't just get one of each type of fish because they will become afraid of each other. So you do your research, you know which styles you want to bring home and now you can head to the pet store.
Once at the store check the environment of the tanks you are purchasing from. Obviously, if you see any "floaters" you don't want to pick from out of that tank. Check for slimy looking or pale colors, cloudy objects hanging from the fish and of course anything swimming a little funny. On your first trip you want to only get 3 fish at the most. Once you have decided on which you want to bring home they will put them in a bag for you and off you go. I also recommended getting a few snails too. Sometimes if you ask they will just put them in your bag with the fish for free for you. The snails help keep your tank clean.
Now you finally have your fish home and you are ready to add them to the tank. Well you have to let them float on the top first in the bag. This helps them get used to the water temperature of your tank. Then after 5 minutes you add one cup of water from your own tank to the bag and let them continue to float on the top for another 5 minutes. You repeat this one more time and wait another 5 minutes before you finally use a net and get them from the bag into your tank. You do not want to just dump the bag into your tank in case the water was contaminated from the pet store.
So your fish are now happily in their new home. The first 24hours are the most critical. If they make it through that, then you should be all set and have no issues with your tank and the water. Make sure to check the temperatures every day and the water flow from the filters. Make sure algae isn't growing and so on. And keep the water level at the top of the tank. After a week of having your fish lively and no problems, you may then start to add more to your tank. Again every time it is best to not get more than 3 fish at a time, and to always check that they will get along with the fish you have home already. After about 5-6 fish you should also look into getting Algae eaters or bottom feeders to help maintain the cleanliness of the tank. Some places sell shrimp too, which will help keep things clean and off the bottom of the tanks.
The last and most important thing is cleaning the tank. This should be done around every two weeks. No more, maybe less depending on how clean you keep it. Getting a siphon I think is the best way to do so. They are less than ten dollars and easy to figure out. Youtube.com offers many demonstrations on how to use it as well. You don't need to take the fish out either this way. The suction isn't strong enough to such up the fish. And remember every time you clean it, you are to only siphon out no more than 25% of the water from the tank. You want to keep as much as the old water in as possible because it now has bacteria that the fish actually need to stay alive. When you clean the water you should also change the filter too.
Other things to consider, most fish like a lot of hiding places. Having a light is good too. You do not leave it on at all times though. It is best to keep on for half the time and off the other half. Feeding is done once a day and not a lot. Depending on the amount of fish in your tank depends on how much you should feed them. Ask your local pet store for more instructions on feeding. If you pay attention to most of these key factors you should be successful in owning your own tank without many fatalities in the process.
