How Do I Care for My Betta Fish?

Here are some tips on how to take care of your new betta fish, also known as siamese fighting fish.

First of all, here are some rules when getting a betta fish:

1.) Never put it in a tank with any other fish. It got the name of siamese fighting fish for a reason. It can and will fight to the death to defend its territory. Some individual fish are an exception to this rule, but the fish will never be truly happy unless it's alone in it's environment for most of the time. If you are an experienced aquarium keeper, you know ways to get around it, but if you aren't, then don't try.

2.) Never use bottled or spring water. It's too clean. Yes, thats right. Too clean. This fish you just bought was most likely raised and kept in conditioned tap water, so changing the type of water will only hurt it.

3.) ALWAYS use tap water conditioner in the tap water, before you place the fish in it.

4.) Feed the betta food specifically made for that breed. They have special needs, and need certain nutrients only food for its own species can provide.

Ok, so you just bought the fish, right? Did you get the tap water conditioner, and food? Did you buy a proper aquarium? Bettas only need a small environment, and there are special tanks that you can get for them for under $10.

Ok, run some tap water into the aquarium. DO NOT place the fish in the new water yet! Leave him in the container he was bought in. Try to make sure the water you are running into the tank is about room temperature. When the water has reached the same approximate temperature as the water the fish is in, then add the tap water conditioner, according to the directions on the bottle. Slowly add a bit of the new water into the container with the fish, every 15 minutes or so. Once the container is full, dump half of the water out, (Make sure you don't dump the fish out), and start again. It's a long process, but this will ensure the health and proper acclimation of the fish. Once the water in with the betta has been replaced twice, fill the tank again to full, at room temperature. The reason you need to do this twice, is to make sure the fish is properly accustomed to clean water. He's most likely been living in his own urine and feces for days, maybe even weeks. Put the tap water conditioner in, and whatever decorations and gravel you want, and then slowly and carefully pour the betta and the water he is in, into the tank. You are done. Don't forget to feed the fish, and replace half of his water weekly, using the same basic technique of bringing in to room temperature, then conditioning it, then putting it in with the fish.
