How to Make an Indoor Water Garden Complete with Aquatic Plants and Fish
Make this easy-care, indoor water garden in less than an hour.
All you need to make an indoor water garden is a clear glass container, aquarium gravel, charcoal and sand, an aquatic plant and fish of your choice. The directions I will give are designed to make a small, easy-care, tabletop water garden, but it can easily be adapted to suit a larger fish aquarium.
How To Make An Indoor Water Garden
Choose a large, clear glass container. Anything that will hold water and is large enough for an aquatic plant and fish will work fine.
To the desired level inside the glass container, mix equal parts of aquarium gravel and sand. The total height level of the gravel and sand should not be over 1/2 half the height of the glass container, with about 1/4 of the height looking the best.
Add a small handful of aquarium charcoal to the top of the gravel and sand mixture.
Add your aquatic plant choice to the container, nesting it into the gravel and sand mix, then add a light sprinkling of gravel to the top to prevent the aquarium charcoal from floating around in the indoor water garden. If you have chosen a floating aquatic plant, add the plant last.
Slowly add water to your indoor water garden container, but don't use water straight from the tap. Water straight from the tap contains chlorine and fluoride, both of which are harmful to aquatic plants and fish. If you use tap water, you will need to allow it to sit uncovered for 24 hours or add a few drops of water conditioner to the water prior to pouring it into your water garden container. You can use purified water straight from the water container to fill up your indoor water garden.
If you want to add a fish to your water garden, wait at least 3 days so the water will have time to reach room temperature and any debris will have settled to the bottom of the water garden.
Place your indoor water garden in a location that will receive 4-6 hours of indirect sunlight per day. Change the water weekly, topping off water level as needed and if you've added a fish, don't forget to feed the fish.
Aquatic plants are divided into two main groups, planted and floating. The planted types need a medium to grow roots in, the floating types don't. Some aquatic plants will also require feeding, check with your plant supplier for the specific needs of the aquatic plant you choose.
A small, tabletop indoor water garden looks best with only one aquatic plant in it. Good choices for the planted types are; horsetail, baby's tears or parrot feather. Good floating aquatic plants choices are water lettuce, water hyacinth, sweet flag or duckweed.
A floating aquatic plant with one small gold fish swimming around in your indoor water garden will provide living, visual impact indoors during those long, cold winter months ahead.
