Shark Vs. Octopus: Life Imitating Art - Hollywood Film Becomes Real Life Event in a Seattle Aquarium
A shark is attacked by an octopus in a Seattle Aquarium. They battle it out to the death, and the fight is caught on film. This real scene mimics a recent hollywood movie.
However, the movie is now reality!
In an aquarium in Seattle, some 4-foot sharks were housed together with a host of other creatures, including an equally large octopus. Aquariums usually fill their tanks with a good balance of fish and predators that can survive together. I'm sure the aquarium staff felt that the octopus would be safe with its stealth and camouflage techniques. However, a surprising turn of events occurred, as some of the sharks started disappearing over a period of several weeks. The staff began to find pieces of shark carcasses in the tank. Finally, someone set up and manned a camera at night to see what was happening. They caught an amazing scene on video.
The octopus had been capturing the sharks and killing them. It was recorded catching one of the sharks by wrapping its powerful tentacles around the shark's body and immobilizing it. Then it dragged the predator down into its lair. Here is the video link: shark fights octopus. The video has gone viral and its sweeping across the internet.
It wasn't entirely clear whether this was a feeding exercise, or if the octopus was killing the sharks to avoid being eaten himself. Was he merely trying to rid the tank of dangerous predators? We apparently don't know yet. Evidently, there's a lot about the octopus we don't know.
Keep it mind, these were 3 and 4-foot spiny dogfish sharks, and not giant tiger sharks or great whites. Of course, this was only a 4-foot octopus too... Could there be a 21-foot octopus out there in the deep ocean snacking on larger prey?
In any event, it's a funny case of life imitating art. The movie, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, which we thought was an absurd notion, has come to real life. It's not the first time a movie has turned into a real event.
So how many other movies might actually come true? Deep Impact, or maybe 2020? How about King Kong or Godzilla? It's interesting to think about. I'd prefer to see Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium come to life, just from a safety point of view. It would be fun to see Godzilla become reality, but only from a distance, maybe on CNN. Although ... it might be the one event we need to pull the world together and stop internal fighting amongst ourselves.
