Building Your Own Aquarium
If you like the idea of a large aquarium to display your prized fish, yet can afford the cost. Try building your own aquarium to brighten your home.
Acrylic, glass, or plexi-glass are the main types of materials used to construct an aquarium. You will need to decide which material you want to use and how large you want your tank before beginning your project.
Glass is a nice choice for small to medium tanks. You will need to use plate glass and not tempered, since tempered glass shatters more easily if cracked. If you want a large tank, acrylic or plexi-glass is probably the better choice.
You will need a stand that will support the weight of the water when the tank is full. Measure the dimensions of the stand so you will get the right amount of material for the bottom and sides of your aquarium. You can have the pieces cut at the place of purchase, or if you own a router and have some skill to use it, you can cut your own pieces. Which ever way you decide, the pieces need to be cut straight and all edges sanded smooth.
Once you have your material cut and smoothed the edges, it is time to begin constructing your tank. If the tank is of considerable size, you will want to think about attaching braces to the longer sides of your tank. To attach the sides and seal the tank, you will need to use silicone or solvent seaming. The type of material used for the tank will determine which one you will use. For the sake of this article we will use silicone.
Place the bottom piece of your tank on your stand and place duct tape, sticky side up, every few inches along the bottom piece. Now align the front piece onto the bottom and seam it with silicone, leaving any excess to be cleaned later. Smooth the silicone into the edges and along the sides with your finger or thumb. Once the silicone is in place, fold the duct tape up onto the front piece. It is easiest if you have someone to hold the front panel until you can get one of the side panels in place by using the same method. Follow this pattern until the bottom and all sides are firmly in place.
Once the tank is standing, you can enforce the tank's stability by applying any extra silicone needed and any required braces. Allow the silicone to set up and dry at least twenty four hours. The longer you can let the silicone dry out, the better off you will be.
Once you have the aquarium built and cured, you will want to start filling the tank slowly with water, checking for any leaks or noted problems. After the tank is filled and no leaking is noted, you can begin having a little fun. Next apply your pump and filter, making sure is it sufficient enough to maintain your tank. Now you can start adding rocks and plant life.
Last, but not least, you can begin to fill the aquarium with your fish and start enjoying your hard work.
