The "Moonlighting" Fallacy
The "Moonlighting Curse" is often invoked as a reason why TV romances are doomed; but the reality is a bit more complicated.
(I know some of you are too young to have seen the show, though you've probably heard it invoked in this context. Check here for some background, or peruse this excellent fan site for more information.)
I was there. I discovered the show early in its second season and watched it through to the bitter end, and I can tell you from firsthand experience what killed it--and it wasn't getting the characters together sexually/romantically. It was a combination of factors: the show was notoriously and publicly difficult and expensive to produce, regularly ran over budget and rarely managed to produce the expected number of episodes per season. Scripts were sometimes being rewritten up till moments before the sides landed in the actors' hands. None of this stuff was secret; we didn't have the internet back in those days, but we did have magazines and interviews, and people involved were surprisingly forthcoming. There was a writer's strike during the third season, which only increased the show's already staggering production delays. There were also Cast Members' Other Projects, chiefly Bruce Willis shooting the first of the Die Hard franchise and Cybill Shepherd suffering through a difficult twin pregnancy. And then there was the problem of the writers taking collective leave of their senses following the aptly nicknamed "Big Bang" episode, sending Maddie off to Chicago, having her marry a guy she met on a train--all sorts of stupid dodges designed to work around the fact that the two main actors were simply unavailable to do more than phone in a line or two. And that, my dears, was the death of Moonlighting: not getting the characters together, but artificially, awkwardly keeping them apart. Watching them fight and freak out and make out and make up and make love could have potentially been amazing--because damn it, when that show was good it was amazing, unlike anything else on TV and willing to take the most ridiculous chances. They tackled Shakespearean rewrites and film noir and letting both the lead actors sing, but in the end their creativity failed them when it was most desperately needed. Watching the ruins of that great, great show limp along to the miserable conclusion was hard as hell. I actually grieved that ending, because it was so very wrong.
There was this fine piece posted to an NPR blog last year in response to irked fans invoking Moonlighting while complaining about the back-and-forth between the lead characters on Fox's popular procedural Bones. Coincidentally, it was someone complaining about leaked sides for an upcoming Bones episode that led me into this rant, and led me to find the NPR piece. Resolved sexual tension does not kill a good show. Well-written characters in believable scenarios are much harder to destroy.
Also I would point out that there is already a far greater depth of characterization on Bones, and a much deeper bond between Booth and Brennan, than we ever saw on Moonlighting with Maddie and David. But that's another rant for another day.
