Five Aquatic Plants for Water Features in the North
This author and gardener offers firsthand experience with aquatic plants for water features in the North.
Five Aquatic Plants to Consider for Water Features in the North
Pickerel Rush. Pickerel rush (see photo attached) is a perennial hardy bog water plant (emergent/marginal category) that has bluish purple colored spiked blooms. Its stems can grow up to two to three feet tall. Its roots need to be submerged in two to twelve inches of water. Our flowers start to bloom in early summer until fall arrives. They need plenty of sun but do grow in partially shaded areas. Pickerel rush can be used in water gardens by planting the flowers in mesh plastic pots, also known as planting baskets, and submerging the pots in water.
Water Lily. Water lilies (see photo attached) are fragrant aquatic perennial flowering herbs (emergent category) that are native to the eastern half of North America. Their beautiful flowers bloom from June to September. The blooms actually open each morning and close in the late afternoon for approximately five days in a row. Water lilies reproduce from seeds and the spread of rhizomes. Our lilies are in mesh baskets and are roughly fifteen inches in diameter and ten inches deep. The water lilies we have are growing in water that is about eighteen inches over the basket.
Duckweed. Duckweed (floater category) can produce flowers that are often referred to as "The Smallest Flowers in the World". The plants are stem-less and bear seeds that grow in quiet waters. Duckweed plants are green and grow in blanket-like groups. Duckweed can be found throughout the world with the exception of harshly cold regions. The plants are used for shelter by pond water species. They also provide food for waterfowl.
Anacharis. Anacharis aquatic plants (submerged category)) do not need much care once "planted" under water. These plants aid in pond health by producing oxygen for fish. They also help fight excessive algae growth and offer cover for your pond fish. We have found that is best to use one bunched anacharis plant per two to three foot square inch area in our ponds.
Cattail. Cattails are native North American aquatic unisexual plants (marginal category) that can often be found in abundance around the borders of water bodies. They provide homes and nourishment for birds, insects, and amphibians. Humans have been known to enjoy them as food, too. Their large furs like heads often resemble cat tails in the literal sense! These marginal perennial plants grow in mud and can reach over nine feet tall. Cattails grow in dense strands and generate from rhizomes. Their root systems help prevent erosion from occurring. Having them as a part of your backyard water garden landscape can be both visually and environmentally beneficial. They work best as border plants around your pond. Cattails bloom in spring and summer.
