Low Tech Aquarium Guide
A less expensive, yet very practical way to keep and maintain a freshwater aquarium.
The well kept-home aquarium enhances the warmth and beauty of any room in the house that it graces. It is art and it is science, as it literally and figuratively brings life into any home. It is a natural conversation piece and a source of pride for the whole family. That being said, let's get started.
Once you have purchased your aquarium you need to find a place for it in your home. Location will be the key factor here. Assuming of course you have purchased an aquarium stand with your aquarium you can pick your placement. If your home aquarium does not have a stand, you will need a well constructed stand to support the weight of the aquarium as well as its contents.
When placing your aquarium in it's location be sure to avoid areas of high traffic, those prone to direct sunlight, and areas with drafts from the home ventilation system. Staying clear of these areas will keep your tank from algae outbreaks, fluctuating temperatures, and a stress free environment for your tank inhabitants.
Now that you've placed your aquarium in its permanent home, you can begin setting it up. First you will need to add the substrate. The most commonly used substrate is aquarium gravel. This however is not the least expensive of your choices. Gravel is great for it's ability to maintain and it comes in a vast array of colors. But, this guide is for practical fish keeping. A less expensive alternative would be using Play Sand. Yes, the sand you romped around in making castles in your sand box as a child. It comes in 50lb bags for prices as low as $3.99! A 50lb bag will provide a 1" substrate for aquariums up to 55 gallons. Therefor, if your aquarium is smaller than 55 gallons, you can have a 2" substrate with a little left over. Play Sand gives a more natural look to your home aquarium as well as providing a more natural environment for your tank mates.
It is time to grab the buckets. You are now ready to begin filling your aquarium with water. Before doing so, place a dinner plate on top of the substrate to avoid disrupting substrate. Now you may begin pouring your dechlorinated water. There are additives that you can use to clean your tap water of chemicals that are used in the treatment facilities. They are fairly inexpensive but will save you money in the long run as your fish will not tolerate chlorine in their water! If you have well water in your home, you will not need any water conditioners to purify your water.
Fill the aquarium half way then set the buckets aside. With today's prices, the aquarium decorations available on the market are not as inexpensive as they used to be. So, the less expensive decor is the natural decor. You can find your aquarium decorations as close as your back yard! It is all up to your particular taste as to what you have your aquarium customized. Things to look for are rocks that can provide a center piece as well as pieces of driftwood.
Once you have collected your natural decor from the wild, you can begin cleansing it. Driftwood as well as rocks, contain bacteria found outside. That bacteria may not be beneficial to your home aquarium so you will need to rid your decor of it. For driftwood you have a few options which are all fairly simple to do at home.
When you first get your piece of driftwood home, be sure that it is a hard wood and not a soft wood. You will want hard wood as softwood begins to rot in the aquarium over time and will leach saps into the water at a very fast rate. Stick with a clean piece of hard driftwood without any rotten or bug infested parts.
You will need to scrub your driftwood with a clean brush to remove any dirt or debris. No chemicals or detergents can be used here as it will poison your fish. Now you must sterilize your driftwood so it can be used in your aquarium. These are methods used by most aquatic keepers today and all are very simple tasks to complete. Just choose which method suits you best as they all will have the same effect.
Bake It: For driftwood you will need to place the wood in your oven at 200-215 degrees Fahrenheit. The wood will need to bake for at least 2-12 hours hours depending on the size of the piece. This method however, will dry out the driftwood making it harder to sink.
Boil It: If you have a pot big enough and a piece small enough, this is the way to go. Boiling the wood will not only sterilize it, but it will also help the wood sink in your aquarium. Be sure to let the wood cool for a few hours once boiling it so it does not raise the temperature of your aquarium.
Wash It: Another way to sterilize your natural decor is to wash it in your home dishwasher. You will need to do a normal cleaning but do not add any detergent. Be sure to turn off the Heater Dry so that your wood stays soaked and will sink upon placement into your aquarium.
Freeze It: This particular method is best for smaller pieces as well as for your rocks. Place the decor in a plastic grocery bag once it has been scrubbed and cleaned. Let the wood or rocks freeze for around 8 hours. After doing so, simply take the decor out of the bag, run it under hot water for a few minutes and it's ready to go!
Please note that it will take a few weeks for your driftwood to sink in your aquarium. You can mount the piece to a piece of cleaned slate using screws to speed up the process. Other methods include situating rocks around the piece of driftwood to hold it down until the wood water logs. Placing the rocks around the driftwood in a decorative fashion will also aid in the final product of your aquarium.
Now that your driftwood is prepared, it is time to add your plants. Although plants are not very expensive to purchase, this is a guide for low cost setups. That being said, the best solution to getting plants at low cost is to find other keepers in your area. Joining forums or keeper clubs will network you with other aquarists who will most likely give you clippings for free.
Live aquatic plants need trimming just as well as terrestrial plants. Therefor, instead of just tossing the healthy clippings into the garbage, keepers will give them away or sell them to next to nothing. All you need are a few sprouts planted, the right conditions, and you will have an aquatic jungle!
For a low budget aquarium, you will need "low light" plants. This way, they will prosper in the same lighting that came with your aquarium. These plants include but are not limited to, Java Fern, Java Moss, Anubias, Christmas Moss, and Crypts. All will do very will with standard viewing lighting.
You may also find plants that are native to your waters. In the America's, these will include Duckweed, Cabomba, Anacharis, and Water Lillies. Just be aware that some of these plants are intrusive and may take over your tank. Frequent trimmings will keep the intrustive species at bay however.
You should now begin filling your aquarium to the top with water. Once full, you can start your aquarium filter, heater, and lighting. Let the aquarium stay running for at least two weeks before adding any livestock. The aquarium has to go through a bacteria cycle producing the bacteria your fish need to survive.
It is good practice to change at least 10% of your aquariums water on a weekly basis. This will keep the ammonia levels down and provide a clean living space for your fish. Most fish keepers buy test kits to keep track of the ph, nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia levels in their aquarium. These test kits can begin to add to costs and there is a free alternative.
Most, if not all, fish and pet stores will test your water for free. All you need is something to put a water sample in and to take it to your local pet store. The employee will test your water and give your results as well as tell you how to fix any problems that may be occurring in your tank. I would recommend having your water checked at least every two weeks. Once your water gets passed by their test kits you can begin adding fish.
There are many places to get your fish. The least expensive that I have seen are buying them from others in your area. Many keepers post unwanted fish needing to be rehomed online and on forums for next to nothing. If something has outgrown their tank or has spawned, they will practically give them away. This is another good reason to find a local fish keeping forum, as many users will post fish they need rehomed within the forum.
Breeding fish is not rocket science in any sense of the word. Therefor, many keepers that have fish that may be spawning need to get rid of the fry. This is a good chance to get healthy fish from water parameters close to your own and for a very reasonable price. Just be sure to research the fish you have in mind to be sure it will be compatible with any other tank inhabitants.
There is a limitless supply of information about aquarium keeping on the internet and in books. This guide will surely get you started in the right direction. No matter how far you may take your participation in this wondrous hobby, you will always come away with the feeling that your life has been enchanced and enriched.
