Leaf Kelp: Red Plant like Material
If you've noticed some type of maroon or red like plant material that is growing in large saltwater fish tanks, it's probably Leaf Kelp.
In order to keep the Leaf Kelp alive you will need to use the correct supplements and keep the temperature and salinity at the correct levels. You will need to keep the salinity at around 1.022 to 1.025. You will also need to keep the temperature somewhere between 72 and 76 degrees. If you can keep this levels right than you will not have a problem keeping the red Leaf Kelp alive. The Leaf Kelp adds a lot of color and decoration to any saltwater tank, no matter what size, as long as you have a somewhat good saltwater lighting system.
You will want to make sure that you don't have any types of fish that will eat this plant. Sometimes is there is not enough algae or seaweed in your fish tank, your fish will start to eat this plant instead. You don't want to purchase this plant and then have your fish eat it all. You should purchase seaweed and place it on veggie clips inside of your fish tank to help keep the fish from eating pieces off of your Leaf Kelp.
If you run into a few problems and you need to start medicating your fish you will need to remove this plant from your aquarium. You cannot leave it in the aquarium and expect it to live and be healthy. You will need to drain out some of the water and place some of the substrate in the new aquarium and place the Leaf Kelp inside of the unmedicated tank. You will also have to hook up a heater and a filter system because they require a decent level of water movement.
