How to Take Great Photos at the Aquarium

A brief tutorial on managing the challenging situations of aquarium photography.

First of all, you should arrive at the aquarium right when it opens to ensure that it is not too crowded. Weekdays are best, but you might want to call ahead to make sure there isn't going to be a school field trip present during the time you plan to arrive. If you go on the weekends, arriving early is essential. If you are experiencing technical difficulties taking photos of a particular tank, move along and come back to it later. While you are taking other photos you might get an idea of how better to approach the previous tank.

The main challenge of aquariums is dim lighting. There are two ways to counter this when you are shooting handheld (most aquariums don't allow tripods). One way to counter low light is to shoot with a fast (large aperture) lens, and shoot wide open or nearly wide open. This will let a lot of light into the camera, but there is a problem with this approach. When shooting wide open you lose depth of field, so it is important that your focus be precise. With moving subjects like fish, accurate focus is often difficult, so shooting wide open is almost guaranteed to lead to blurry images. Even when the focus is accurate, you may find that you dislike the shallow depth of field, as fins and other parts of the fish may be out of focus.

The other method (and the one I prefer for dimly lit tanks) is to increase the ISO. Some DSLR cameras are better at high ISOs than others. My particular camera, a Nikon D300, is excellent up to ISO 1600. I rarely use it beyond that, because increasing ISO leads to noise and can make the images grainy. Experiment with your particular camera until you find a high ISO that looks acceptable. You can always use noise reduction software like Noise Ninja after the fact, but it is always preferable to get it right the first time and not go overboard with high ISOs. In most tanks, I will use as high an ISO as possible (without reaching unacceptable levels of noise) and shoot with a short-range zoom lens at one of the middle apertures (e.g., f/8). This allows my camera to be sensitive enough to what little light is coming in and still maintain a decent depth of field so as to get the entire subject in focus.

Another challenge of aquariums is the glass of the tanks. Ideally, you want this glass to appear invisible in photographs, so you may want to bring a small microfiber towel and some glass cleaner with you. The aquarium staff may have rules against this, but most likely they will appreciate your help to wipe smudges off the glass! Another trick is to use a rubber lens hood and put the camera hood right up against the glass. This is an effective way of eliminating any glare, but it requires that you use a lens with a short minimum focusing distance.

Sometimes a flash is required, and you should use one when needed, but be mindful of signs prohibiting flash in certain areas. Some animals such as leafy sea dragons and octopi are highly sensitive to light, and flash should never be used when photographing them. When you use a flash to photograph other species, experiment with different angles so you don't get reflection off of the glass. You might need to bounce the flash at several different angles before you find one that works. It's then a matter of waiting in place until your subject swims or floats into the correct part of the tank so that you can take the picture.

Automatic focus is not always the best way to go in aquariums. Particulates in the water and other moving entities can interfere with your camera's ability to lock focus on your subject. If the focus seems to be hunting, feel free to switch over to manual focus. Sometimes autofocus will focus on the most prominent parts of the animal and the eye will be out of focus. You may not notice this unless you zoom in on your camera's display and look at your picture's finer details. If the autofocus is not locking in on the subject's eye, manual focus may be required.

The beauty of digital is that you can see your images immediately after taking them, and you should make use of this feature as much as possible when at the aquarium. Zoom in on your images and make sure that noise levels are acceptable and that the correct parts of your subjects are in focus. Experiment with different settings and even different lenses if you find things aren't working well. Above all, make sure you are having a good time and respecting other visitors.
