Hydrilla in Wakulla Springs State Park, Florida
Beautiful Wakulla Springs is the victim of a serious attack, locked in an ongoing struggle against a particular variety of aquarium plant known as hydrilla, which chokes and clogs the waterway with relentless determination.
In April of 1977, the biologist for Wakulla Springs State Park discovered hydrilla in the river when he was on a plant identification boat tour. No one knows how it got into the Wakulla, but within months it had spread to the swimming area near the spring itself. Spreading out across the surface of the water in a solid mat, hydrilla blocks the sunlight, depleting the oxygen levels in the water and raising water temperature while replacing native plants and crowding out other creatures, such as apple snails and the limpkins which feed on them. Park workers have tried simply pulling the hydrilla out by the ton, but it only multiplies, being able to start a new plant with just one broken section. Later a full-time "hydrilla tamer" was hired to battle the plant, which was spreading an unheard of 40 to 50 feet down toward the opening of the spring (Portman, 2020).
The first year in the park, $15,000 was spent trying to eradicate the plant, but by 1997 this amount had increased to an amazing $60,000. 2.5 million pounds of hydrilla was pulled out of the springs in 2001, and finally, despite initial reluctance to use herbicide in the springs as a control measure, it became accepted as the only viable option. Unfortunately the herbicide being used does not destroy the roots of the plant. Another herbicide could accomplish that, but it might be more harmful to native species. In the meantime, the herbicide being used keeps the hydrilla problem under control for at least 6 or 8 months, at which time it is applied again. "It's just a necessary evil that we are stuck with," park Director Sandy Cook said, "until we come up with another method." (Portman, 2020).
