Freshwater Fish Aquarium Species Profile: The Ghost Shrimp
Ghost shrimp are an interesting addition to any fish tank but don't pair them with larger fish.
These tiny, willowy little creatures are a fun and interesting addition that will spruce up just about any boring fish tank. Ghost shrimps usually are extremely cheap compared to other fish and similar creatures that roam the bottom of tanks as they come in at the cost of around 5 of them for $1.00 or so.
Ghost shrimps are very small and almost translucent, hence their name. They will prance and swim around the bottom of your fish tank with seemingly non-stop movement and exhibit and easy-going, graceful motion that makes them appear to almost float around the tank like a ghost that makes them very appealing to kids to watch for minutes at a time.
There are a few problems and concerns you will need to be aware of with ghost shrimp, however. Many people use them to feed their larger fish in their tanks due to their cheap cost and high nutrition value so it's something you should note when introducing them to your own tank. Most fish larger than about 3 inches in length will probably eat the ghost shrimp without a second thought due to their enticing movements and small size.
If you want to keep the ghost shrimp around for a long time you should pair them with smaller fish, especially fish that don't go near the bottom of the tank very often, such as the popular neon tetras.
Ghost shrimp are good to have in small communities of about ten and will live for approximately two years each if properly taken care of in your tank. They generally don't need a lot of food as they are excellent scavengers who will scan the bottom of your tank and clean it of all excess food products like flake food that sinks to the bottom.
They grow to about 1 1/2 inches maximum size so they don't take up a ton of room in your tank, and the function they provide by cleaning your tank and adding extra activity to keep an eye on make them a worthwhile buy for their small price and the intrigue they can add to your fish tank's community.
Just make sure that your tank isn't overcrowded with fish because while ghost shrimp are good at hiding due to their translucent appearance, they become attractive prey for fish when they're all clumped together and they have no room to escape. Ghost shrimp are fast enough to get away and are actually good swimmers both forward and backwards but in small quarters they will be devoured.
