government wants precious mineral, plays nice with the natives. the Na'vi wont leave. enter infiltration/manipulation, scare tactics, then violence/force. result: war with a twist of forbidden love.
The multiple storylines are nothing anyone hasn't already seen and/or attempted to recreate in other films. This film covers every base: money, power, love, conflict, everything intertwined within them, and more. You have the government and military attempting to extract a precious mineral to save Earth at odds with a fervent doctor, Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver), studying a world called Pandora, its people, animals, plants, and history, and an ex marine, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), thrust in the mission to replace his deceased twin brother, but creates his own when he falls in love with the Na'vi princess, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), and realizes what he's gotten himself into. Obviously, that's just the icing on the cake.
The government wants the land, or what's on it, but the natives won't leave, so the government tries to teach them, provide for them, and learn from them. When that attempt proves unsuccessful, they try infiltration and manipulation before they turn to scare tactics, then violence and force, resulting in war, which makes for an even more interesting story when you involve the complications of love. Sound familiar? It should.
This film isn't just about a financially rewarding rock for money-hungry intolerant corporate morons, a love story between a marine and a princess, or a megalomaniac jarhead with a bruised ego. The underlying story has to do with the journey; the work, the choices, the sacrifices made, and the lessons learned when you realize there is something much bigger than yourself to keep in mind. Every story has a message, one message with a myriad of interpretations. Here is one: this film is a re-creation of history, in its own right, with a little insider's perspective.
Exhilarating effects, art, and direction combined with stellar performances and narration kept my attention undivided for the entire two and a half hours of the movie. I can't say the same for other recent releases. James Cameron made something unimaginable so realistic, so plausible. It took an upwards of ten years, specially designed equipment, and the development of a new language and culture to produce this monumental picture. Hold onto your hats and cross your fingers and toes, as he plans two sequels upon the success of this film.
