SunGrow Feeding Ring, 4x4 Inches, Floating Food Square, Reduces Waste and Maintains Water Quality, Suitable for Flakes and Other Floating Fish Foods, for Goldfish and Other Smaller Fish, 1 Piece
- ✔ ENCOURAGES PICKY EATERS TO EAT MORE --- Some fish are more finicky than others or may be a bit more shy and not want to eat with the other fish. The SunGrow Floating Fish Feeding Ring allows you to feed specialty foods to the pickier fish while sprinkling standard floating fish food to the general population of fish. It won’t take long for your finicky fish to quickly learn that the square fish feeder is where to find their supper.
- ✔ PREVENTS FISH FROM BEING BULLIES --- A great way to prevent fish in a community tank from being bullies is to use multiple floating feeding rings. Fill one square fish feeder and allow your more aggressive fish to dash over to eat. Once they are occupied, add floating fish food to a second feeding square for the more timid fish. Bullies can’t hog all the rings, so add as many as you feel necessary so all your fish can eat in peace.
- ✔ REDUCES DEBRIS BY KEEPING FOOD CONTAINED --- By placing your pet fish’s food directly into the feeder square, it inhibits the flakes and pellets from floating into unwanted places such as the filter. A cleaner aquarium filter is far more effective at keeping your tank’s water at a higher quality level and reduces excess debris throughout the tank.
- ✔ FITS PERFECTLY IN A FISH TANK --- At a convenient size of 4” x 4” (10cm x 10cm), the lightweight Square Feeding Ring for small fish from SunGrow is constructed of safe, high quality black plastic. It comes complete with a matching black suction cup to hold it securely in place. You also have the option of allowing the fish feeder to float freely along the surface of your freshwater tank or saltwater aquarium.
- ✔ SAVES FISH OWNERS’ TIME AND MONEY --- Effective and creative, the Square Feeding Ring for your neon tetra, guppy, and goldfish is fantastic at saving money on excess food, maintaining high-quality water and reducing filter clogging. Placing your flakes into a specified area means that you can control the dispersal of food and more is eaten and less is wasted. Less stray food and filter clogs allows you to spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying your pet fish.

How to Set Up a Tropical Fish Tank
Using my own experience supported by a variety of sources, this is the definitive step-to-step guide to setting up a small tropical freshwater aquarium.
The amount of time to set up a tank from scratch can vary depending on a variety of factors, including:
-The type of water you use (alkali if the water originates from an area with a lot of chalk, acidic if the water comes from a 'boggy' area with lots of peat),
-The type of fish you will use (fish such as the Glowlight Tetra and Siamese Algae Eater will tolerate a wider range of conditions, whereas a beautiful Discus Fish is very fussy and will be unhappy unless the water conditions are spot on).
1) We shall start off by placing the filter into the empty tank. The filter is one of the most important parts of the tank because this is where the beneficial bacteria do their job in cleaning the water of toxins and organic waste. A new aquarium is all about the bacteria balance and it can take weeks to achieve this. There are different types of aquarium filters. You can get a biological filter into which you insert a medium or a magnetic type which filters underneath the gravel.
I prefer to use the magnetic type of filter known as an under gravel filter. This requires less maintenance than a normal biological filter. If it is an internal filter, place it one of the rear corners of the tank. It is best to read the instruction manual for the filter as they can vary. Don't use the filter until there is water in the tank.
2) Next we will add the heater to the tank. The heater normally is placed in the rear pane of glass, under the water if it is a submersible heater. The heater doesn't need to be much larger than half the height of the tank. I prefer to place the heater vertically, slightly off-centre on the rear pane of glass. Depending on the type of fish you are intending to keep, the temperature should be somewhere between 23 and 28 degrees Celsius. Don't turn the heater on until there is enough water in the tank.
3) Now we will add the substrate to the tank. This will usually be some form of gravel or sand. It is nice to have some sand on the surface especially if you are going to keep some filtering fish (e.g. catfish or algae eaters). Before adding the substrate to the tank you should clean it by thoroughly rinsing it. After you have soaked it for a few minutes, drain the water and add the substrate to the tank. Try to add the substrate evenly because this will make filtration more 'even' throughout the tank.
4) Now we shall start to fill the tank with water. I find the best method is to use a 15 litre bucket. Fill this three-quarters of the way with tap water (it doesn't matter if you use cold water because you don't have any fish to shock). Add a de-chlorinator to the water, following the instructions on the bottle. This removes the chlorine and other substances that fish will find toxic from the tap water. Then add to the tank.
Keep doing this until the tank is about half-full. This is the time to add your decorations to the tank such as bogwood, rocks and other decorations. Next you should add some nice robust plants and plant these into the substrate. But if you are starting out, there is no real need to add plants yet.
5) Now you should top up the tank with de-chlorinated water. But don't add any fish yet! You should do some 'fishless cycling' now. This means letting the tank run without any fish inside it. Fishless cycling allows the beneficial bacteria to colonise and the water quality to improve. Before adding fish, test the water with a nitrate test kit. These normally work by turning light blue if the water quality is good and staying purple if it is poor. This process can take up to three weeks.
Once the water quality is satisfactory you should be able to go out and buy some fish. Make sure you choose tropical fish, and it is often best to start off with hardy fish such as most types of tetra and a Siamese Algae Eater. The Siamese Algae Eater is a great species because it eats both green and brown algae but they can grow to be too large for your tank. Try to choose species that eat the same type of food. It is best to start off with flake food as this is the cheapest, easiest and most common type of food. You can get this from most pet stores.
Research and ask questions before buying any fish, you need to see what is compatible with what. You also need to take into account the oxygen levels in your tank. Generally the larger the surface area of the tank and the more real plants you have, the larger number of fish the tank can support.
