Five Tips for Setting Up a Turtle Tank
Keeping a pet turtle inside is not very difficult. If this is your first time, there are a few things you should know about setting up a turtle tank. You will need to provide appropriate light, temperature, water, and shelter. This article will...
Basking
In the wild, turtles love to bask in the sun. Therefore, you will need to setup a dry area in the turtle tank for this purpose. Most people use a rock that the turtle can climb onto. This rock will need to be completely dry, so you need to make sure the water level is not high enough to wet it.
Light
You should put your turtle tank in a room in which the lighting doesn't change too much. You will also need to provide a sun lamp for the turtle to bask in. This sun lamp will need to provide enough light so the turtle can bask comfortably. Sun lamps will also need to provide enough heat for the turtle's shell.
Temperature
The temperature inside the turtle tank is also important. During the day, the temperature should be around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature can should be near 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the night. You should keep an eye on the temperature inside the turtle tank by using aquarium thermometers.
Shelter
Turtles occasionally need to get out of the open. Therefore, you will need to provide some form of shelter inside the turtle tank. You can use a simple cardboard box with a door on one side. The turtle tank should also have a large branch and some hay inside the shelter to give your pet a taste of its natural habitat.
Water
You will need to filter the water inside your turtle tank just like you would with a fish aquarium. Another option would be to use dechlorinated water or natural spring water. You need to make sure you don't use regular tap water. The chlorine and fluoride in this water will destroy the pH balance inside the turtle tank and may lead to health problems.
These are a few tips for setting up a turtle tank. You have to make sure you provide a dry area so that your turtle can bask. You will also need a sun lamp to provide light and heat. There will need to be some form of shelter in the turtle tank so that your pet can use it whenever it wants to get out of the open.
