Aquarium Short Film Review
Review of the short film Aquarium, an insightful and intriguing snapshot of an awkward and painful period of a teenage boy's life.
It's a slice of life film about a troubled teenage boy. "Troubled" not in a drugs and gangs and crime kind of delinquent way, but just in more of a mundane, suburban, adolescent way. He's basically a confused, quiet, sad kid dealing with what is a really awkward time of life for almost all of us.
What I realized by the end of the movie, and what most spoke to me, is how he has so much inside of him all along that he craves to express (whether he is conscious of that craving or not), and yet he somehow doesn't feel able to do so.
Especially there's the issue--which opens the film--of his euthanizing his dog. He's stoic about it on the outside, but it's not hard to imagine the ocean of conflicting and powerful emotions he has to be experiencing about that.
His family is not a bad family certainly. His parents are decent people who make genuine efforts to get him to open up, and his two older brothers razz him and act kind of crudely, but never in an extreme or mean-spirited way. Pretty much a normal--actually pretty good--family. But there's enough baggage built up that it isn't natural for him to be real with them and talk about his feelings.
He's somewhat more at ease with a couple of his school buddies--they share an interest in aquariums--but still, they have their little habits of how they kid around with each other, and what subjects they can comfortably talk about and what they can't, so it's not like he can really get deep with them either.
What it takes to open him up is someone who is familiar enough and at the same time unfamiliar enough.
There's a girl who lives next door that he knows a bit, but she's only lived there a short time, plus she goes to a different school. So she's not a part of his life at a significant level.
But he likes her, and when he does get an opportunity to talk to her one-on-one at an aquarium, you sense how much he needs to connect. Almost immediately "I killed my dog" spills out of him, and you know it's not just about his wanting to get close to her because he's a horny teenage boy, but that he's reaching out to her because he has other needs, other pain, he carries inside him.
It's a short film, the scene with the girl is very brief, but it's enough. It's insightful about a certain stage of life, a certain kind of emotional difficulty.
