How to Create a Reef Aquarium
A reef aquarium is an aquarium containing live corals and other animals associated with coral reefs. Creating a reef aquarium is more complicated compared to a normal aquarium.
First most important point is the size of the tank. You should choose the size of the tank based on availability in your case. Decide the place in the house and then the size to select should be the maximum size within budget and available space. A 75-gallon tank is a generous size for the home marine biologist to establish their own eco-system. Once the size is finalized you should choose between glass and acrylic. Acrylic will scratch easily but is easier to drill and is much lighter. Make sure to get a tank that is pre-drilled with an internal "overflow", sometimes described as "reef-ready" tank. This provides a cleaner look than the traditional "hang on the back" overflow system. Choosing a tank that is wider and not too deep provides a more natural look. Depth can be around 24 to 30".
Once the tank is finalized next step is to decide what the tank contains. It is aesthetically pleasing and healthy to the fish to keep all of the decorations one hundred percent organic. You can have several species of fishes provided they are compatible in same environment and live rock. Live rock is a vital element to any eco-system. A live rock means a rock with microorganisms on it. It takes care of cleaning the impurities left by fishes in the water and also bring more beauty to the tank. Isn't it the way nature has chosen for the seas and oceans? Next different corals of your choice and also relevant to the environment of the species of fish selected. You can also add cleaning creatures such as snails, small hermit crabs and finally herbivore reef fishes.
Sand or slit is to be placed at the bottom of the tank for the roots of the coral plants chosen to penetrate deep enough and take hold. These corals give more beauty to the tank when the installation of lighting is finished.
Setting up lighting is an important step. Metal halide lamps provide the best lighting for most of the corals commonly kept. One halide bulb for every 2-3 feet of tank length is usually recommended.
There are many other options for creating perfect reef aquarium but are very costly. However with consideration of above points and creativity you can make your perfect reef aquarium of your home which is aesthetically, ecologically and financially friendly.
