Purple Ribbon Gorgonian: Most Colorful Type of Gorgonian
All of us purchase coral for a number of different reasons. I have always believed that in order to keep saltwater fish alive and happy you must replicate their environment from the ocean.
If you want to keep the Purple Ribbon Gorgonian alive you will need to purchase a good lighting system for your tank. You can look at your local pet stores for a good light or you can purchase one from a website online. eBay often times has a large supply of saltwater lights that you can get for an affordable price. Make sure that you are getting a good light before you spend the money on a lighting system. Good lights will have at least 2 daytime bulbs and 2 night time bulbs. They will each be at least 65 watts a piece. This is for a typical 30 gallon setup. You will need at least double that if you have a larger fish tank.
You will need to keep your salinity somewhere around 1.022 to 1.026. You will also want to keep the temperature somewhere around 72 to 76 degrees. You can keep the temperature from dropping below 72 degrees buy placing a heater in your saltwater tank. You can keep the temperature from getting too warm by placing your light on a timer. When you run your light for over 6 hours it starts to heat up your fish tank. You will then start to develop an algae problem which is not good for coral. If you find algae on your coral you will need to gently pull it off of your coral.
When you have several types of coral in your fish tank you will need to space them far enough to grow. The Gorgonians can grow to be very tall so you will want them at the bottom of your fish tank. You will also want to make sure that you provide the Gorgonians with iodine, trace elements, calcium and strontium. All of the Gorgonians will require the same supplements and therefore you can place them all in the same tank together. The Purple Ribbon Gorgonian is just one type of Gorgonian that you can place with many other different varieties. The Purple Ribbon is the most colorful and comes in every color that you can imagine.
