Tips when Setting Up a Saltwater Aquarium

Saltwater tanks are great for adding new fish friends to the family. They can be a wonderful experience. Here are some tips when setting up your saltwater aquarium.

When Starting Out:
It's easy to just throw all the fish in your tank at once; however, take more precaution if you are adding the individuals to a separate or more spacious aquarium. If you do end up getting new fish, keep in mind from what environment they had come from. When you purchased them, did they come from tap water accompanied with added saltwater? If they did, then that should be fine to keep them living in said tap water. If you didn't, you are going to have to find a way to keep their original water type going.

Filling Up the Tank:
When you fill up the tank, you can always just use a hose, although I wouldn't recommend turning your back on it for more than a few seconds. A leak might spring, and so it's probably best to add the water in with jugs equipped with measurement labels on the side. This way not only are you able to fill up the tank to the precise measurement, but in case there is ever a leak, it's so much more convenient to just stop pouring it in right then and there and to treat it right away.

Avoid Decorating Right Away:
With new fish, it's probably in their favor to allow them some time to swim around and check out the new place before you go ahead and fill up their environment with different decorations and fake plants that would otherwise obscure their sense of their surroundings during the first few days. Also, you will want to keep in mind to place in the devices for filtering and heating first. Find areas for them before putting in decorations, as those can also make a hassle for you when you're trying to find places for said necessities, and their accompanied pieces like the wires.

There might be days, especially in the beginning, when your aquarium ends up cloudy or foggy. This can be anything from "white water" or particles floating around, added substances in the tank, or new blooming bacteria that aren't usually harmful. Usually it's nothing to worry about and clears up within a matter of hours or days. Make sure to keep your aquarium clean often and to check up on the filtration system occasionally.

Saltwater tanks are great for various fish and other ocean wildlife to bring into your own home. It might take a bit of work to set up the tank, but otherwise it's totally worth it.
