Understanding Nitrogen Cycle in Aquarium

The first thing that fish keeping beginner should know is nitrogen cycle. By understanding nitrogen cycle, it will assist aquarist to identify imbalance in aquarium and avoid catastrophe from hitting the aquarium.

One of the most important parts of successful fish keeping is understanding nitrogen cycle. Nitrogen cycle is simply a process of converting harmful ammonia into non-toxic compound through a process called nitrification. It happens naturally and is one of the most important biological filtration that is essential to every aquarium. It is applicable to both freshwater and saltwater aquarium setup.

The whole nitrogen cycle process started when fishes or plants excrete waste and uneaten food left over inside aquarium. All these wastes will be converted by Nitrosomoas bacteria into toxic ammonia. This process will continue in the aquarium until all the waste becomes completely decomposed. Ammonia will then be converted to nitrites by nitrifying bacteria. Nitrite is less harmful compare to ammonia, but still can cause the same effects. The final process of the nitrogen cycle is to convert nitrites to nitrates. Nitrate is actually a natural fertilizer, thus will be absorbed by plants. This cycle will continue in the aquarium until equilibrium established. That means that the rate of ammonia excreted will be same as the rate of ammonia being converted to less harmful nitrates.

For newly set up aquarium, there are a few ways that aquarist can choose to cycle the aquarium. The first method is using hardy fish. This is the most common way of cycling new aquarium. Fish, e.g. danio will be selected to introduce to the aquarium for about 5-6 weeks before adding more community fish.

Second method is using live rock, filtration medium or gravels from a matured aquarium. A matured aquarium normally would contain enough colonies of good nitrifying bacteria. Especially on filtration medium, this is the place where they live. Thus, by transferring the live rock, filtration medium or gravels, you are transferring the good bacteria as well to a newly set up aquarium. This will expedite the growth of nitrifying bacteria in the new aquarium. In most cases, this method requires half of hardy fish method.

Third method is using commercial starter culture. A beginner aquarist who wishes to cycle the aquarium using a fishless method can use a commercially ready-for-use starter culture to boost the growth of nitrifying bacteria. Product like Cycle or Fritz is widely attainable in the most local store. The main concern when using this kind of products is its freshness. You need to make sure that the culture is still within the freshness when using it.

As conclusion, a successful fish keeping experience starts with understanding nitrogen cycle. Once aquarist knows and understands about method to achieve nitrogen cycle as well as how to monitor the sign of imbalance, he will be able to react when imbalance occurred and avoid catastrophe from hitting the aquarium.
