Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp: Most Common Saltwater Shrimp
One of the most common types of saltwater shrimp is known as the Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp. You will easily recognize the shrimp by what it looks like.
The Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp will not destroy or hurt any of your coral. You can place this shrimp in your tank without worrying about it killing your other shrimp. You will need to keep the salinity at around 1.022 and 1.026. You will also want to keep the temperature at around 72 to 76 degrees. As long as you can keep these levels right and do water changes once every two weeks you will have no problems. These shrimp are sensitive to high nitrate and ammonia levels so you will need to make sure that you drain about 20% of the water.
These shrimp work well in groups of at least two. They work to clean up the algae off of your live rock and sand. The more of these shrimp that you have the less algae that you will have as well. You can purchase different types of food to feed the shrimp such as different types of fish food flakes and frozen food such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. You can purchase all of these at your local pet store. If you want a variety pack of saltwater food you can purchase it from the freezer in the fish section of your local pet store.
These shrimp are very sensitive to medication. You will want to pull the invertebrates out of your fish tank before you start to medicate your fish. You can place them in a separate, smaller fish tank which has a heater and a filter as well. You will want to wait at least a couple of weeks before you place them back into the fish tank because the medication will still be present. You can speed up the process by placing carbon in your filter system and changing more of the water more frequently. If you follow all of these steps you shouldn't have a problem keeping your Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp healthy and well. These shrimp are very popular because they are great to add to your aquarium.
