The Joy of Saltwater Aquariums
Saltwater aquariums, large and somewhat tough to maintain, provide a magnificent slice of coral reef ecosystems in your home.
While fresh water aquariums are by far the most common and easy to maintain, the installation of salt water aquarium brings this hobby to a new level of enjoyment. Be warned: The trade-off is that a salt water unit requires more care, and by its nature, must be rather large to be successful.
Maintaining the proper level of salts, or Ph, is absolutely critical to keep your fish and plant life thriving. Salt water tanks have a tendency to have periodic and unexpected spikes in the Ph levels, which if unchecked can lead to disastrous mortality to the creatures in your tank. One rule of thumb when considering a saltwater tank is that the larger the better. Most experts will recommend a 30 gallon tank as an absolute minimum. Large capacity tanks ranging in size of up to 100 gallons are preferred. The larger the tank, the less likely you will see spikes in Ph levels, and in general are easier to maintain than smaller tanks.
With a large tank it is possible to have your own coral reef environment. Yes, a living coral reef. But there are logistics that must be considered. The filtering system required for a salt water tank is far more complex than the simple single filtering containers for a fresh water aquarium. A sophisticated bacteria filter balances the bacteria count in the water. Skimmers are needed for surface rubbish, and salt filters of course maintain that pesky Ph level.
Lighting is one of the keys to providing an environment conducive to a thriving reef ecosystem. Traditional "hood" systems that rest on top of the tank, common in fresh water tanks, are not suitable for a salt water aquarium. Hood type lights also tend to overheat the water as well. Special lighting systems designed to be mounted or installed above the top of the tank are preferred. Maintaining a suitable ultra-violet light level is a key to your reef environment. The staff of your aquarium supply store will be able to assist you in your lighting design. Ceiling mounted, flush to the surface lighting is at once dramatic, and provides the ability for both daylight and night lighting. Moonlight can be replicated, enabling you to also enjoy nocturnal reef life as well as the traditional reef fishes.
Saltwater aquariums are much more expensive than similarly sized freshwater tanks. The maintenance of a saltwater tank is more tedious, and indeed will take more of your time. However, there is really nothing that compares to the sense of serenity one gains from relaxing in a comfortable chair and just enjoying the view of your very own coral reef and its inhabitants. The wide variety of colors, size, and shape of reef fish available is staggering. Angelfish, Butterfly fish, Damselfish, and the famous Clownfish are among the many varieties available. Starfish and urchins can dot the bottom of your aquarium. You can even have a shark, ray, and a puffer, if you want! As a hobby, it doesn't get much better than this.
