Get Rid of the Aiptasia in Your Saltwater Aquarium
This article discusses both chemical and biological methods for eliminating aiptasia from your reef tank.
There are two basic approaches to removing aiptasia from your tank: chemical and biological. The least expensive approach is chemical. Most chemicals on the market today require the aquarist to use a syringe (you can normally recycle one from an old test kit) and "squirt" the chemical onto or into the aiptasia. The problem with this method is the aiptasia will tend to withdraw into the rock crevices when movement is sensed, making it extremely difficult to fully treat each anemone. Chemical removal becomes almost impossible if you have numerous aiptasia since each anemone must be treated individually.
There are several chemical products available on the market today through your local fish store (LFS) or numerous online retailers which contains various chemicals that are designed to kill the aiptasia without affecting water quality, most are under $10. You may want to research a specific product through discussion boards to determine its success based on the experience of other aquarist. If you only have one or two aiptasia in your tank however, you may want to try a very inexpensive method first. Simply fill a syringe with boiling hot water and inject directly onto the aiptasia - make certain you are not close to any corals, or they may be harmed by the hot water. With only a few aiptasia, the hot water approach may be a viable option to either eliminate the aiptasia, or at least keep its growth under control until another solution is found. Under no circumstances should you try and use tweezers to physically remove the aiptasia - any tissue left behind could turn into an entire colony of aiptasia.
The second approach is biological. Nature has provided different types of species which will actually eat the aiptasia. Copper-banded Butterfly fish and peppermint shrimp are both known to eat aiptasia and are readily available through your LFS or online live fish retailers. The problem with these specimens is they will also eat regular fish food and even corals. Gaining in popularity is use of the berghia nudibranch (Aeolidiella stephanieae). Berghia eat only aiptasia (some aquarist have reported the berghia eating the pesky majano anemone, but such instances have not been fully documented). What does this mean to reef keepers who have invested thousands of dollars stocking and maintaining their tanks? Corals will be safe - including zoanthids, SPS, LPS, and soft corals. As an added benefit, the berghia do not release toxins when they die, unlike other nudibranchs.
The average life span of a berghia nudibranch is just under one year. However, once all the aiptasia has been removed from your tank, the berghia will starve regardless of age. Many aquarists pass their berghia along to others who are suffering from aiptasia infestation. Once difficult to find, and extremely expense when found, berghia can be purchased through various online retailers and some LFS. Although prices were as high as $24 each a decade ago, most berghia are now available for roughly $10 each. Realize berghia do not work overnight and should be purchased in quantities of three berghia per 10 gallons. You can obtain berghia through companies like SaltyUnderground, Berghia4Aiptasia (a wholesale company, but sells excess inventory online in retail packs at reasonable prices), Berghia.net, and Inland Aquatics.
Remember, you can avoid aiptasia infestations completely by quarantining all live rock and coral for at least six weeks after purchase!
