A Basic Guide to Turtle Care
Considering getting a turtle? This article will tell you what you need to know about basic turtle care.
The first thing you need for your pet turtle is a place for it to live. A standard midsized aquarium is enough for one turtle. It should be at least 20 gallons, but needn't be more than 55 gallons for a single turtle. Turtles are cold-blooded animals, so be sure to keep the aquarium hot enough. 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal, with a slightly cooler temperature at night. You should also try to avoid sudden changes in temperature, since this is much more of a shock to a turtle than it would be to us. Use a heat lamp on the aquarium and avoid taking your turtle outside during cold weather.
The aquarium should have both a water area for the turtle to swim in, or at least stand underwater in, and an above water area to walk around on. Try to keep the water as clean as possible. Make sure all the materials in your turtle's aquarium are either edible or not small enough for the turtle to eat.
Turtles also need plenty of light. Either make sure your turtle gets enough natural sunlight from its environment, or provide some artificially through florescent lighting, otherwise your turtle will not get the nutrients it needs and will not be as healthy. The light can be turned off at night.
For feeding your turtle, you can either buy turtle food at the pet store or plan your own diet for your turtle. Turtles are mainly herbivores, so berries and leafy vegetables like cabbage and lettuce are ideal. Turtles can also eat insects, like crickets and spiders, but that should be an addition to a main diet of vegetables. If you have an unusual species of turtle is a pet it may have slightly different needs than the standard kinds sold as pets. Try to ensure variety in your turtle's diet so that it gets everything it needs.
One of the great things about turtles as pets is that they don't need to be fed as often as other pets. Once every other day is enough for most turtles, though it varies with age. When in doubt, overfeed your turtle. Turtles do not overeat the way other animals do, and as long as you make sure to clean out the uneaten food, the turtle will be fine. Once you've determined how much your turtle actually needs, reduce the amount you feed it to something more appropriate.
These are the basic steps that you should take when getting a turtle. If you follow these guidelines your turtle should live a very long life and bring you lots of happiness.
