'Bones' Season 5 Episode 18 'The Predator in the Pool'
In 'Bones' Season 5 Episode 18 'The Predator in the Pool' partial skeleton is found in the body of a hammerhead shark. The folks at the Jeffersonian note bite marks from fish that do not coexist in the wild, but do coexist in an aquarium.
Spoilers follow.
Bones and Booth go forth to the local aquarium to investigate. Bones and Booth are informed that, yes, a hammerhead was released into the wild recently. But no one could just fall into a display tank and die without notice.
Then a grouper coughs up a human skull. Pandemonium ensues.
Bones and Hodgins don diving gear and eventually find most of a human skeleton inside the tank. The forensics investigation soon reveals it to have belonged to a self help guru/con artist who bases his theories on actions in the wild, particular the oceans. He claims to have cured himself of paralysis by swimming with sharks off Brazil.
There are a couple of red herrings, one involving the self help guru's old partner, the other an employee at the aquarium and a member of the Russian Mafia. In the latter it is revealed that filters used in aquarium tanks are very useful in filtering out blue dye from smuggled vodka.
The real killer, of course, was a fourth grade teacher and, as it turns out, an acolyte of the dead man. She is suffering from a wasting disease that caused considerable pain. The swimming with the sharks trick doesn't work, of course, which puts the teacher quite out. And when it is discovered that the paralysis was cured by experimental surgery using blue shark embryonic material, she snaps. But, fascinating enough, she has not felt any pain since she did the murder. A great comfort to be had in jail, no doubt.
But, as usual, the greatest mysteries on Bones are those of the human heart. Why is Hodgins trying to push Clark into the arms of Angela when he still wants her himself? Is it some sort of sick, vicarious thing he has?
And Bones and Booth are trying to "move on" and console themselves with other people, he with a marine biologist, she with a high official with the FBI. They both find their new partners pretty charming, but the awkward way with which they talk about it together reveals whom each would find even more charming, if they would just overcome their fears.
