Five Saltwater Fish for Beginners
Marine fish are generally known for being aggressive, picky eaters and extremely sensitive to water changes. These five fish are great for beginner marine aquarists because they are not these things.
Clownfish
The clownfish is popular among beginners in large part because of the movie Finding Nemo. Clownfish are easy to care for and pretty inexpensive, expect to pay between $10-20 for one. Clownfish can be territorial towards members of their own species, but are relatively non-aggressive. Clownfish come in many different varieties and colors, and depending on the species you get can grow up to 6 inches. Clownfish like to hide in anemones in the wild, but novice aquarists shouldn't attempt to keep one in their aquarium, instead provide lots of plant life and rocks for the clownfish to hide in.
Damsels
Damsel fish are among the easiest saltwater fish to care for. They tolerate water changes better than most marine life, and will eat a wide variety of fish food. They only grow to be about 3-4 inches, and are found in a wide variety of shapes and colors. The most common types of damsel fish are yellow-tailed blue damsel and the blue damsel. These fish can sometimes be aggressive, but will thrive in a tank with lots of space and hiding places.
Gobies
Goby fish are great for beginning aquarists. They are peaceful bottom dwellers that will aerate your tank by burrowing beneath the sand. They aren't generally aggressive with other fish, but it is recommended that you only keep one goby per tank, as they will become aggressive with other goby fish. Goby fish grow to be about 6 inches in length and come in many different colors and patterns.
Dottybacks
Dottyback fish come in a wide variety of colors and patterns and are only moderately territorial. In general, only one of this species should be kept in a tank or fighting will occur over territory. Provide lots of hiding places and possibly some live rock to make the dottyback most comfortable. Dottybacks are hardy fish that eat small plankton. Expect to pay between $15 and $50, depending on which species you choose.
Basslets
Most basslets are hardy, colorful fish that make a great addition to any aquarium. Like the other fish on this list, only one should be added to any tank to prevent territorial disputes. Provide plenty of hiding spaces to make this fish feel comfortable. Basslet fish will grow to be 2-4 inches in length and feed on zooplankton and small crustaceans.
