Changing just one aspect of my diet made me healthier and full of energy, in one easy step.
Five years ago, I gave up soft drinks. I totally 100% quit drinking soft drinks. The sugar train stopped, and I began feeling better in just weeks.
I had been reading a lot about the harmful effects of soda pop, and how soft drinks contain absolutely no nutritional value. This got me to thinking, especially as I was hit with fatigue and headaches so often back then. At that time I was drinking about 3 sodas per day (root beer, Pepsi, and others). I decided to stop drinking them for 3 weeks. I stepped down to 1 soda on the 1st day, then half a glass on days 2 and 3. On day 4 I quit drinkings soda "cold turkey" full stop. I stayed completely off sodas for 3 whole weeks, and my body felt great! No more fatigue or headaches. I was inspired to exercise a little bit more and even add a higher percentage of fruits and vegetables to my diet. I never went back to soft drinks: 5 years with no soda!
So what should you drink instead? I drink water for most of the day, instead of sodas or soft drinks. I start breakfast with coffee, then water and juice for the rest of the day. I prefer grape and orange juice, and guava juice when in Asia traveling. Guava has more vitamin C than any other fruit (twice the orange) but we cannot get it fresh in the U.S. One advantage of traveling in Asia has been the wonderful guava available. Berry juices and natural fruit shakes are good too. I add soy milk to my breakfast cereal.
I also drink green and red tea during the day, on occasion, and camomile tea in evenings at least 3 times a week. Otherwise, it's just lots of H2O : water. Drinking life giving water, instead of sugary soda pop, has changed my life and made me healthier, thinner and full of energy.
I am extremely thin, at 150 pounds (6 foot tall), so maybe this is a good diet tip for anyone who needs to lose some weight too.
My teeth have also benefited. I haven't had any cavities in 5 years, not one, since I gave up soda pop and soft drinks. My gums and teeth are healthy, after a decade of multiple fillings and a root canal.
So maybe you don't need a complex diet to change your life and get healthy. Just add some water, and remove the sodas. By the way, I don't think diet sodas are any better. Either you give them all up, or don't bother. Switching to diet soda is like having 3 pieces of cake instead of 2 and a half. Your teeth and body deserve better.
I still eat pizza and all sorts of bad food, but I've found that drinking water with my pizza, instead of soda, really makes the difference.
Quitting sodas is a lot like quitting smoking. It's not easy, but you can do it. I did it, and I feel great. Now I crave water when I'm thirsty, and I don't even miss the soft drinks.
