Why is My Aquarium Water Cloudy?
There are many reasons why aquarium water turns cloudy. Check for one of these common causes while doing a partial water change.
New Gravel
Did you recently add gravel to the tank? Even well-rinsed gravel may cause clouds the same color as the gravel. If the fish are very active, they may be stirring up the gravel and releasing more clouds. Eventually, these fine gravel particles will settle down, but can be easily stirred up again. Do a partial water change to help eliminate the gravel dust. Try not to stir up the gravel as you do this.
Filter Problems
Did you recently have a power outage or had to turn the filter off to change a cartridge or check for damage? When the filter gets turned on again, this can blast a large amount of waste particles into the water. Provided your filter is working fine, the cloudy water should turn clear again in about 12 hours. However, if you haven't changed the filter media in a while, the overloaded filter will keep pumping waste back into the water, which will cause bacterial blooms.
Bacterial Blooms
It is normal for healthy tank water to have some bacterial in it, but not so much that you have difficulty seeing the fish or decorations. The bacteria are feeding off of decaying matter. This could be a dead fish, dead plants, uneaten fish food or too much fish waste. If you have a bottom feeder like a Chinese algae eater or a plecostomus in the tanks, do NOT expect that fish to clean up all uneaten food or algae. You have to do regular partial water changes. Contrary to popular belief, bottom feeding fish do not eat fish feces. They do have standards.
Management
Check the tank to see what the cause of the bacterial bloom is. Are the plants still alive? Can you find all of the fish? If a fish is missing, check under decorations and inside of the filter to find what's left of the corpse. Remove the corpse. Then perform a partial water change. Only about one fifth to one quarter of the water needs to be removed so the fish do not go onto chock at any sudden chemical changes. Repeat the next day if necessary.
