What is a Wavemaker?
Most people do not know what a wavemaker is used for. It's only used for saltwater tanks. Some wavemakers will actually turn the powerhead in your aquarium into a wavemaker.
A lot of different types of hard and soft coral will require a lot of water movement. This is partially to keep the coral free from debris. When algae gets stuck to the coral it will start to decay the coral and pretty soon you will see your coral go downhill. With a wavemaker, the strong water current will help to keep the coral free from algae, uneaten food and debris. Some types of debris you do not notice until you see your coral starting to look a little bit differently. If you ever notice algae on top of your coral you will need to remove it.
Invertebrates also love water movement. In the ocean, there is a lot of water movement. In a saltwater tank, this is often times harder to replicate. You will want to get a lot of water current in your saltwater tank if you have a large tank. With smaller tanks, a canister filter with a powerhead should be enough to reach all of the coral. If you have a lot of coral and a long, large fish tank you will definitely want a wavemaker hooked up to your canister filter. If you have two canister filters you can choose to hook up wavemakers as well but the powerheads should be able to rotate and they will most likely provide enough of a current.
Wavemakers look somewhat like little cameras that rotate. They will push out water in all different directions and a lot of them will rotate 360 degrees to reach coral on all different sides. Wavemakers are also not as expensive as you might think they would be. The wavemakers that hook up to powerheads will often times cost you less than $10. Instead of purchasing an extra canister filter you can add in a couple of wavemakers or do both. Wavemakers are awesome for saltwater tanks and they help to keep your coral alive and healthy. The best thing to do if you have a tank which is larger than 55 gallons is to keep two canister filters running, one on both ends. Purchase wavemakers and hook them up the power heads on both canister filters. Now you will never have to worry about having enough water current in your saltwater fish tank.
If you are having a hard time finding a wavemaker at your local pet store you can look up wavemakers on eBay or you can also look for wavemakers on eBay or at any pet store that you can purchase items online.
